Ecuador has no single national transit app. In Quito, Quito Nos Mueve is the official municipal tool for the Metro, Trolebús and Ecovía. It can manage a Cuenta Ciudad, show routes and stops, display balance and generate a QR fare. The municipality said in May 2026 that an email address is indispensable for a Cuenta Ciudad, but official instructions also assume that some users will link an Ecuadorian identity card or obtain a physical Tarjeta Ciudad. A visitor should create the account and test funding before depending on the phone. Keep cash or buy an official physical or printed QR fallback at a station because current users have reported delayed balances, failed foreign-card top-ups and expired QR problems. The older Metro de Quito app now directs users to migrate to Quito Nos Mueve and should not be recommended as the main app. Moovit is a secondary route planner rather than an official ticket. Cuenca's municipal visitor guide specifically recommends it for urban bus routing, but the rider should still verify the route number, direction, last service and fare locally. Cuenca's tram and buses use their own payment arrangements, and the city's contactless integration remains a staged project. Guayaquil's Metrovía and city bus information also needs local confirmation. Do not infer national acceptance from Quito's QR. Keep small cash, ask the accommodation which stop and direction to use, and avoid displaying a phone near an open door or window. Current operating hours can change during security restrictions, protests or emergencies, so check the municipal operator on the day of travel.
