Buy and activate an app ticket before boarding or entering the Metro and train paid area. Inspectors can issue a 100 euro penalty fare in addition to the ticket price. An ordinary adult single ticket can instead be bought by tapping a contactless Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the validator.
Select the zones first, use the same physical card or phone for any transfer and keep it available for inspection. Contactless does not sell child, concession or day tickets, and it is not valid on U-line buses. Helsinki Airport is in zone C and the city centre is in zone A, so the normal airport rail journey needs an ABC ticket. Waltti Mobile is useful in many other cities, including Oulu, Rovaniemi, Kuopio, Jyväskylä, Lahti and Vaasa, but it is not Finland's universal transit app and does not cover Helsinki, Tampere or Turku.
Tampere's Nysse and Turku's Föli have their own rules and both offer visitor-friendly contactless payment. Check the local operator before arrival, validate on every required boarding and do not assume that a ticket from one region works in another.
