Official Budapest tickets, direct Hungarian travel and safer taxi choices

Hungary uses the forint, HUF, even where a tourist business accepts euros.

  • BudapestGO app iconBudapestGOTransit
  • MÁVPlusz app iconMÁVPluszIntercity Transport

What to know before you go to Hungary

Pay in HUF, reject card or ATM conversion to your home currency and keep modest cash plus a physical backup card. In Budapest, BudapestGO is the official planner and ticket app, but digital tickets need an active data connection and correct validation. Keep a paper ticket or travelcard as a fallback. The 100E airport bus needs its own ticket, currently HUF 2,500, unless you qualify for the HUF 1,000 add-on.

Pay&GO works on the Metro and 100E without an app, but the products are not interchangeable. For travel beyond Budapest, use the new MÁVPlusz app for direct train and interurban bus tickets, enter each passenger's legal name and birth date, and save tickets offline. Bolt and Uber dispatch licensed yellow taxis in Budapest. They use the regulated physical meter, so an estimate is not a fixed fare.

Use an app, a reputable company or the official airport booth, never a street solicitor. Budapest street parking meters were removed on July 1, 2026, so drivers need an approved app such as Parkl, SMS or a phone call. Confirm the rental car's motorway e-vignette before entering a toll road. Call 112 for an emergency, carry your original passport and keep valuables secure on busy transport, at stations and in nightlife areas.
