What to know before you go to Lithuania

Bolt has the broadest practical ride coverage; Uber now operates in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys, not Vilnius alone. Urban tickets are city-specific. In Vilnius, a contactless card buys one full-price 60-minute ticket, while the new JUDU app replaced m.Ticket and m.Parking in July 2026. Kaunas and Klaipėda have separate systems.

Use LTG Link for trains and Autobusų bilietai for many intercity buses. Drivers need daytime lights, winter tyres from 10 November through 31 March, and separate ferry, Neringa entry and parking payments for the Curonian Spit. Enable Lithuania's Cell Broadcast alerts, use LT72 as a supplementary official tool and call 112 in an emergency.

Bolt app icon

BoltEssential

Lithuania's most practical ride app, with broad official city coverage and generally stronger driver supply than its rivals.

Pro tip: At Vilnius Airport, follow the app to the dedicated pickup beside the intercity bus stops. Regional coverage does not guarantee a driver for the return trip.

Uber app icon

Uber

Ride-hailing in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys, useful for a second fare and wait-time comparison.

Pro tip: Uber is no longer Vilnius-only. Compare the complete price and pickup time with Bolt before confirming.

eTAKSI app icon

eTAKSI

Local taxi and private-ride dispatcher in Lithuania's five largest cities, with preliminary pricing and card or cash options.

Pro tip: The displayed fare is preliminary. Select the payment method before ordering and treat an advance request as a request, not a guaranteed car.

Etransport - Taxi and more app icon

Etransport - Taxi and more

Lithuanian taxi and ride dispatcher with an extensive advertised town list, advance booking and specialist vehicle categories.

Pro tip: Useful for a child seat, minivan or regional request, but confirm that a driver accepted it. A town in the service list does not guarantee immediate supply.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Forus app icon

Forus

Smaller ride and licensed-taxi backup whose Deal category lets the passenger propose a fare and choose an accepting driver.

Pro tip: Check the real driver response and arrival time before relying on it. Recent feedback and local reports indicate less dependable supply than Bolt.

Wolt app icon

WoltEssential

Lithuania's broad restaurant and grocery delivery option, with official coverage in fifteen listed cities as checked in August 2026.

Pro tip: Set the exact address before browsing, compare the direct menu and use a precise entrance pin. Smaller-city hours are not the same as Vilnius hours.

Bolt Food app icon

Bolt Food

Restaurant, takeaway and grocery delivery alternative whose actual inventory depends on the selected Lithuanian address.

Pro tip: Compare the complete total after fees and promotions. For a time-critical meal, choose a nearby venue or collect it yourself.

Google MapsEssential

General Lithuanian address search, walking, driving and offline road maps, with useful but non-authoritative transit routing.

Pro tip: Download the region and save exact pins. For the Curonian Spit, separately check the ferry, current Neringa entry charge and Nida parking rules.

JUDU app icon

JUDUEssential

New official Vilnius app for public transport routes, real-time departures, tickets and parking, replacing m.Ticket and m.Parking in July 2026.

Pro tip: Create and email-confirm the account before travel. For one occasional ride, tapping a supported card for a 60-minute ticket is simpler.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Trafi app icon

Trafi

Public transport planner for five Lithuanian cities, but in-app ticket sales are limited to Vilnius and require a minimum purchase.

Pro tip: Do not treat it as a five-city ticket wallet. As checked in August 2026, Vilnius orders have a €5 minimum and other cities use different ticket systems.

Žiogas app icon

Žiogas

Kaunas bus and trolleybus ticket app with electronic fares, a short transfer benefit and a monthly spending cap.

Pro tip: As checked in August 2026, registration and a €2 minimum top-up apply. Scan the vehicle QR code or enter its code after boarding; contactless is easier for one ride.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
e.Ticket Klaipėda app icon

e.Ticket Klaipėda

Klaipėda city app for QR single tickets, period tickets and travel-card top-ups, with card and local payment options.

Pro tip: Buying is not enough. Scan the QR code in the vehicle to activate the selected ticket, and keep it visible for inspection.

Autobusų bilietai app icon

Autobusų bilietai

Intercity coach search and ticket app listing more than 40 Lithuanian and European carriers as checked in June 2026.

Pro tip: Not every departure has online inventory. Confirm the operating carrier, exact station and stop, then manage changes in the same purchase channel.

Smiltynės perkėla app icon

Smiltynės perkėla

Official Klaipėda to Smiltynė ferry app for tickets, current schedules, fares and live views of terminal queues.

Pro tip: Choose the correct terminal: foot passengers and bicycles normally use the Old Ferry, while vehicles use the New Ferry. Neringa entry and parking cost extra.

LT72 app icon

LT72Essential

Official Lithuanian civil-protection app for alerts, emergency guidance and maps of shelters, sirens and evacuation points.

Pro tip: Enable notifications and review shelter information in advance, but also enable Cell Broadcast alerts. The app and maps can fail or need internet during heavy demand.

Buying a local SIM card No ID registration needed

Registration
The rules are murky: some guides say anyone can buy a Lithuanian SIM with no paperwork, while others report stores asking for a passport to register the card. Carry your passport when buying and expect some shops to record your details.
Where to buy
Operator and brand stores in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda, plus supermarkets like Maxima, Rimi and Iki, petrol stations, kiosks, post offices and convenience stores. At Vilnius Airport, SIMs are sold from a Narvesen kiosk, but you pay more there for smaller allowances than in city shops.
Local eSIM
It is unclear which Lithuanian operators sell prepaid eSIMs to visitors. What is clear is that a local SIM or eSIM is excellent value inside Lithuania and poor value the moment you cross a border, so a regional travel eSIM makes more sense for a wider Baltic trip.

Good to know

Prepaid brands wear different names in shops: look for Ezys, Extra, Pildyk and Labas, not Telia, Tele2 and Bite. An idle SIM quietly drains itself: with no plan active, a small daily fee is deducted from your credit, so top up only what you will use and activate a plan straight away. Most importantly, cheap Lithuanian prepaid data does not travel: domestic packages cannot be used elsewhere in the EU and separate, pricier roaming packs are needed, so pick a plan that explicitly includes an EU allowance if Lithuania is one leg of a longer trip. Checking your balance by USSD on Pildyk also costs a small fee; the app and website are free.

Local carriers

  • Telia Lietuva

Largest network with the best coverage. Prepaid is sold under the Ezys and Extra brands rather than the Telia name.

  • Tele2 Lietuva

Fastest speeds by a clear margin and the cheapest way in. Its prepaid brand is Pildyk.

  • Bite Lietuva

Slightly behind on coverage but fine in populated areas. Its prepaid brand Labas needs SMS activation, with instructions printed only in Lithuanian.

Sources and how current this is

Data checked July 2026

Source dates: Prepaid Data SIM Card Wiki: retrieved 30 Jul 2026, page indexed 18 Mar 2026; carries the daily-charge detail with dates | Phone Travel Wiz: last updated 1 Mar 2024 | Gamintraveler: 31 Jan 2024 | Pumpkinabroad: 23 Apr 2025 | Gigago: 21 Mar 2025 (eSIM seller) | ExpressVPN survey: 27 Feb 2026 (demonstrably stale - see conflicts_notes)

Sources disagree: Whether ID is required at purchase is contradicted across sources, with no regulator or operator page retrieved to settle it. The idle-card daily fee and EU roaming surcharge specifics are single-sourced to the prepaid wiki, and all pricing (2024-2025 vintage) was omitted.
