What to know before you go to Netherlands

Use the same physical card, phone or watch at both ends because each device is treated as a separate card. Card acceptance in shops is broad but not universal, while cash remains accepted at most staffed businesses, so carry a second card and some euros. Tikkie is part of Dutch social life, not a tourist wallet: sending requests requires a Dutch bank account, and recipients do not need its app. Cycling is practical but fast and rule-bound.

Rent from a visitor-facing shop unless you already meet OV-fiets account requirements, keep out of cycle lanes when walking, and never hold a phone while riding. At Schiphol, trains are usually the simplest onward option; Uber and Bolt use a signed app pickup point.

Uber app icon

UberEssential

Licensed app-taxi booking in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Eindhoven and nearby service areas.

Pro tip: At Schiphol, follow signs to the App pick-up point. Match the plate before entering and never cancel to pay a driver directly after the trip begins.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Bolt app icon

Bolt

Licensed app-taxi alternative operating in Amsterdam and multiple other Dutch cities.

Pro tip: Compare the final fare and pickup time with Uber, but keep the trip in the app. Supply is less dependable outside listed cities and busy periods.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
TCA Taxi app icon

TCA Taxi

Amsterdam taxi dispatch with advance booking, vehicle choices and in-app or in-taxi payment.

Pro tip: Use it as an Amsterdam backup when app-ride prices surge or you need a larger vehicle. Check the estimate and compare it before confirming.

Food Delivery3 apps · 2 essential

View Food Delivery guide→
Uber Eats app icon

Uber EatsEssential

International food-delivery app with published service locations across every Dutch province.

Pro tip: Try it when your existing Uber account and foreign card are already verified, or when a Thuisbezorgd restaurant offers an unsuitable payment method.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Thuisbezorgd.nl app icon

Thuisbezorgd.nlEssential

The broad Dutch restaurant-delivery marketplace, covering major cities and many smaller towns.

Pro tip: Check the exact restaurant's payment methods and courier details before ordering. Tracking can be less precise when the restaurant handles delivery itself.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Bolt Food app icon

Bolt Food

Restaurant and grocery delivery operating in more than 20 Dutch cities as of August 2026.

Pro tip: It is separate from the Bolt ride app. Enter the exact address before comparing it with Thuisbezorgd.nl and Uber Eats because coverage is not nationwide.

Messaging1 app

WhatsApp app icon

WhatsApp

The practical default for messaging Dutch accommodation staff, guides, businesses and personal contacts.

Pro tip: Verify any unexpected payment request through a known number. Never share an SMS login code or assume a familiar name and photo prove who sent the message.

Navigation1 app · 1 essential

View Navigation guide→
Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

General Dutch maps for walking, driving, saved places, cycling and a first view of public transport.

Pro tip: Use 9292 for live transit and pull over before checking a cycling route. Offline maps do not include walking, cycling or public-transport directions.

Transit3 apps · 1 essential

View Transit guide→
9292 app icon

9292Essential

Nationwide door-to-door planner for Dutch trains, buses, trams, metros and ferries with live operator updates.

Pro tip: Use it to plan, not automatically to buy. A 9292 e-ticket can cost more than tapping with OVpay because ticket pricing and service fees differ.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
GVB travel app app icon

GVB travel app

Official Amsterdam tram, metro, bus and ferry planner with GVB hourly, day, multi-day and group tickets.

Pro tip: Install it only if a GVB pass fits your Amsterdam plans. GVB tickets do not cover NS trains or every regional bus, while OVpay needs no app.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
OVpay app icon

OVpay

Official companion for checking Dutch public-transport journeys, charges and missed check-ins or checkouts.

Pro tip: You do not need the app to tap in and out. Add the exact card or wallet device you used only if you want journey history, alerts or a fare correction.

Google Translate app icon

Google Translate

Offline text, camera and conversation support for Dutch signs, packaging, menus and essential questions.

Pro tip: Download Dutch before arrival, but have a person verify allergy, medical, legal, parking or ticket wording before acting on it.

NS app icon

NSEssential

Official Dutch rail planner for live platforms, disruptions, train occupancy guidance and domestic tickets.

Pro tip: For a normal second-class trip, tap the same compatible card or device in and out. Use the app for live changes and tickets or supplements that a simple tap does not cover.

112NL app icon

112NLEssential

Official Dutch emergency app with service selection, location sharing and operator-started translated chat.

Pro tip: Set it up before an emergency and do not test it. If the app or data connection fails, call 112 directly and give your location first.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Buienradar app icon

Buienradar

Dutch rain radar with English support and short-range precipitation timing for walks and cycle trips.

Pro tip: Use it to time a departure, not as a safety guarantee. Check official warnings when severe wind, lightning, heat or flooding is possible.

Schiphol app icon

Schiphol

Official Amsterdam Airport app for live gates, delays, baggage belts, walking routes and airport updates.

Pro tip: Save the flight here for airport navigation and in the airline app for check-in, boarding passes and rebooking. The airline remains the booking authority.
