What to know before you go to Portugal

In Lisbon, a contactless bank card buys a single Metro ride, but it does not cover Carris buses or trams, suburban trains or ferries. Buy a reloadable navegante occasional card when the journey mixes operators or when a 24-hour ticket is better value. Porto uses the Andante zone system; the Anda app can replace the ticket on compatible Android phones, but recent failures make a physical Andante card the safer visitor choice. CP and Rede Expressos handle many intercity journeys through separate booking systems.

No local payment app is needed: MB WAY requires a card from a participating Portuguese bank. Carry a physical Visa or Mastercard, another card and some euros because merchants choose whether and which cards to accept. Emergency number 112 works nationwide, and serious civil-protection alerts reach roaming phones by bilingual AvisoPROCIV SMS without registration.

Bolt app icon

BoltEssential

Broad Portuguese TVDE alternative useful for comparing the current fare, pickup time and vehicle supply with Uber.

Pro tip: Compare the final quote rather than assuming Bolt is cheaper. Keep the booking and payment in the app, and verify the plate before entering.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber app icon

UberEssential

Licensed TVDE ride booking in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira and many other Portuguese service areas.

Pro tip: At Lisbon Airport, go to P2 Level 2 arrivals and follow the exact app message. Match the plate and never cancel to pay the driver directly.

IzzyMove app icon

IzzyMove

Licensed taxi dispatch and advance booking in Lisbon, Porto and participating regional municipalities.

Pro tip: Keep it as a taxi backup when TVDE supply is poor or prices surge. Check the fare basis and pickup details before confirming.

Food Delivery3 apps · 2 essential

Glovo app icon

GlovoEssential

Restaurant, grocery, pharmacy and convenience delivery across Lisbon, Porto and many other Portuguese cities.

Pro tip: Compare the full basket with the restaurant's direct price. Menu markups, service charges and small-order fees can outweigh a low delivery fee.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber Eats app icon

Uber EatsEssential

Familiar international restaurant and grocery delivery using an existing Uber account in covered Portuguese locations.

Pro tip: Check the final total against Glovo and direct ordering. The delivery charge is only one part of the amount due at checkout.

Bolt Food app icon

Bolt Food

Separate Bolt app for restaurant and grocery delivery in supported Portuguese cities and delivery zones.

Pro tip: Enter the exact address and compare the payable total. A promotion may be limited by restaurant, minimum spend, zone or fees.

Messaging1 app

WhatsApp app icon

WhatsApp

Common contact channel for Portuguese accommodations, tours, restaurants, drivers and personal contacts.

Pro tip: Verify unexpected payment or identity requests through the original booking channel. A WhatsApp profile or Portuguese number does not prove who is messaging.

Navigation1 app · 1 essential

Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

General maps for Portuguese walking, driving, saved places and an initial view of public transport.

Pro tip: Download areas before arrival and save critical routes separately. Offline maps do not provide walking, cycling or public-transport directions.

Transit2 apps · 1 essential

View Transit guide→
Citymapper app icon

CitymapperEssential

Lisbon journey planner covering Metro, buses, trams, suburban trains, ferries and walking connections.

Pro tip: Use it in Lisbon, not Porto. Confirm ticket scope separately because a contactless bank card covers Metro single rides, not every mode in a mixed route.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Anda app icon

Anda

Optional Android ticket and fare-optimization app for public transport in the Porto Andante network.

Pro tip: Use only with compatible Android hardware and confirm the green validation. Carry a physical Andante card because current reviews still report setup and validation failures.

TheFork app icon

TheFork

Optional restaurant search and reservation app with participating venues and time-specific offers in Portugal.

Pro tip: Read the offer conditions before booking. A percentage discount may exclude drinks, menus or certain items and applies only to the confirmed reservation.

Google Translate

Offline text, camera and conversation support for Portuguese menus, signs, labels and essential questions.

Rede Expressos app icon

Rede Expressos

Official national coach booking app serving cities, regional centers and many towns across Portugal.

Pro tip: Compare its departure point and travel time with CP, then save the ticket offline. Coach terminals are not always beside the railway station or city center.

ProCiv Madeira

Official Madeira alerts, weather warnings, closed roads and trails, safety guidance and location-assisted 112 calling.

Pro tip: Install it for Madeira, especially for hiking or driving outside Funchal. It complements 112 and does not replace checking official trail access and closures.

Buying a local SIM card ID registration required

Registration
A passport is required to buy a prepaid SIM and registration is completed in-store; you do not need a NIF (Portuguese tax number) for a tourist SIM. Digital-first providers Woo and UZO do require a NIF or local bank account, so they are not an option on a foreign passport.
Tourist plans and prices
Around EUR 10 (roughly $11) buys a 50 GB+ bundle from the main carriers in city stores. MEO's tourist option gives 15 GB for around EUR 15 for 30 days with unlimited national calls and texts, and airport tourist packages run about EUR 10-25.
Where to buy
Official MEO, NOS, Vodafone and Digi stores plus small phone shops in Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Braga; a city-centre shop can have you connected within a couple of minutes. Vodafone and MEO have desks at Lisbon airport (Terminal 1 arrivals), Porto (baggage claim) and Faro, while NOS is not reliably stocked at airports. Top up at carrier stores, FNAC, Worten, Continente supermarkets or the carrier app.
Airport prices
Moderate. Airport desks offer limited choice at around EUR 10-25 versus roughly EUR 10 for a 50 GB+ city bundle, so buying in town gets you more providers and better deals.
Local eSIM
All three main networks support eSIM, and travel eSIMs run on MEO, NOS and Vodafone. A local eSIM carries the same passport registration, and travel eSIM prices are now roughly at parity with airport SIM prices, so the airport counter's main remaining advantage is getting a Portuguese number.

Good to know

The very cheap Lycamobile deal at the Lisbon airport money-exchange counter (roughly $10 for 25 GB) is known for blocked tethering, aggressive promo texts and APN settings you must enter manually, so skip it if you need a hotspot. Portuguese SIMs work in Madeira and the Azores; pick NOS for Madeira.

Local carriers

  • NOS

Strong, reliable network nationwide and the recommended pick for Madeira.

  • MEO

Best rural coverage for the Douro, Peneda-Geres and Minho villages, with the cheapest top-ups. Both MEO and NOS are good in the Azores.

  • Vodafone Portugal

Often the most data for the money and the fastest urban speeds, slightly less consistent inland.

  • Digi

Low-cost newcomer; rural and coastal coverage is still inconsistent.

  • Lycamobile

Runs on MEO's network and is very cheap, but comes with catches worth reading below.

Source dates: Traveltomtom Portugal guide: 26 May 2026 (first-hand) | Traveltomtom Lisbon airport: 18 Mar 2026 (first-hand) | Unlock Portugal: 17 May 2026 | On Me Travel: 6 Apr 2026

Sources disagree: No material conflicts; price figures differ across carriers and data tiers but stay within the EUR 10-25 band. The Lycamobile tethering warning rests on consistent user reports rather than a tested finding.
