Practical Swedish apps for regional transit, safe taxis and outdoor travel

19 apps9 essentialEuropeLast updated: August 2026

Sweden uses Swedish kronor, not euros. Cards are the normal visitor payment method, but bring a physical chip-and-PIN Visa or Mastercard and a second card because American Express is less universal and a phone wallet can fail.

What to know before you go to Sweden

Swish is widespread among residents but normally requires a Swedish bank account and personal identity number, so it is not a tourist download. Public transport is regional rather than covered by one national ticket app: use SL in Stockholm, Västtrafik To Go around Göteborg, Skånetrafiken in Malmö and Skåne, and UL around Uppsala. SJ is for intercity rail, not city transport, and it does not sell every operator's journey. Taxi fares are deregulated.

Book through a known app, check the yellow licence plate and comparison-price label, match the vehicle and driver, and reject unsolicited airport or station offers. The official SOS Alarm 112 app provides local incident alerts but its interface is Swedish only. Call 112 directly in an emergency. For hiking or camping, download an offline outdoor map, check weather and local restrictions, and use Brandrisk Ute before lighting any fire.

Ride Hailing4 apps · 2 essential

View Ride Hailing guide→
Uber app icon

UberEssential

Licensed app-booked rides across Sweden's main metropolitan regions and many surrounding municipalities.

Pro tip: Use the app's vehicle, driver and fare details. If a driver asks you to cancel and take a taxi directly, refuse and request another ride.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Bolt app icon

BoltEssential

The broadest clearly listed ride-app footprint in Sweden, with 16 official city and regional markets.

Pro tip: Compare the live quote with Uber and a licensed fleet app. Confirm the plate and driver, and never move the booking or payment outside the app.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Sverigetaxi app icon

Sverigetaxi

Established licensed-taxi network covering major cities and regional locations from Kiruna to Ystad.

Pro tip: It is useful where Uber or Bolt supply is thin. Request a fixed price when available and verify whether payment is in the app or in the car.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Svea Taxi app icon

Svea Taxi

New nationwide booking app for a network of established fleets, including Taxi Stockholm and Taxi Göteborg.

Pro tip: Use it for a licensed-fleet fallback or advance booking. Check the fixed quote and requested extras before confirming because it may cost more than ride apps.

Food Delivery3 apps · 2 essential

View Food Delivery guide→
Wolt app icon

WoltEssential

Visitor-friendly food and grocery delivery with a large current footprint across Swedish cities and towns.

Pro tip: Set the exact delivery address first and compare the complete basket with foodora and direct pickup, not only the advertised delivery fee.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
foodora app icon

foodoraEssential

Broad Swedish restaurant and grocery delivery marketplace with coverage across many large and regional cities.

Pro tip: Check the full checkout total and any PRO trial terms. Add the entrance code and floor, and use pickup when a strict delivery time matters.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber Eats app icon

Uber Eats

Useful third delivery comparison with official coverage across many Swedish cities and metropolitan areas.

Pro tip: Availability is address-specific. Compare restaurant prices and every checkout fee, then keep the order phone number reachable for the courier.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Navigation2 apps · 1 essential

View Navigation guide→
Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

Best general-purpose default for Swedish addresses, walking, ordinary driving and an initial transit overview.

Pro tip: Download the area before a rural drive, but use the regional operator for live transit and Naturkartan plus official warnings for outdoor routes.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Naturkartan app icon

Naturkartan

Sweden-focused outdoor guide with maintained trail information, terrain maps, facilities and offline map downloads.

Pro tip: Download the area before setting out, then check protected-area rules, weather and fire restrictions. A mapped trail is not a safety guarantee.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Transit4 apps · 3 essential

View Transit guide→
SL app icon

SLEssential

Official Stockholm County app for journey planning, live information and single, visitor or period tickets.

Pro tip: Temporary visitors can register a payment card without Swedish ID. Mobile tickets need activation; direct card taps cover simple pay-as-you-go journeys.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Västtrafik To Go app icon

Västtrafik To GoEssential

Official ticket, live-departure and journey-planning app for Göteborg, Västra Götaland and Kungsbacka.

Pro tip: Buy the correct zone in the app before travel. Direct bank-card tapping works only in Zone A and you must tap again on every transfer.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Skånetrafiken app icon

SkånetrafikenEssential

Official English-capable app for Malmö, Lund, Skåne and Öresund journeys into Copenhagen.

Pro tip: Pay with Visa, Mastercard or a supported phone wallet and activate before boarding. Tourist tickets and group discounts can be better than separate fares.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
UL app icon

UL

Official journey and ticket app for Uppsala County buses, local rail and applicable Arlanda connections.

Pro tip: First purchase needs phone verification and card registration. Because current ratings report failures, know the machine or on-bus card fallback before travel.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Language1 app

View Language guide→
Google Translate app icon

Google Translate

Optional Swedish text, camera and conversation backup with downloadable language support for offline situations.

Pro tip: Download Swedish before travel and save critical phrases, but ask a person to confirm allergy, medical, legal or emergency information.

Intercity Transport3 apps · 1 essential

View Intercity Transport guide→
SJ app icon

SJEssential

Main Swedish rail app for schedules, booking, digital tickets and trip-specific traffic updates across much of the country.

Pro tip: Use it for SJ and clearly listed partner journeys, but check Resrobot and the named operator because SJ does not sell every Swedish train product.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Vy app icon

Vy

Official booking and disruption app for Vy trains and coaches plus selected other Swedish transport operators.

Pro tip: Choose Region: Sweden and Language: English. Install it when your itinerary names Vy, since operator tickets and conditions are not interchangeable.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Vy flygbussarna app icon

Vy flygbussarna

Official airport-coach app for routes serving Arlanda, Landvetter, Malmö, Skavsta and Västerås airports.

Pro tip: The website can issue the same scannable ticket, so install only for a relevant route. Verify the airport, terminal stop and traffic margin.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Utilities2 apps

View Utilities guide→
SOS Alarm 112 app icon

SOS Alarm 112

Official local incident and public-warning app with nearby alerts, important numbers and a map showing your coordinates.

Pro tip: The interface is Swedish and the app does not replace calling. Dial 112 directly in an emergency and use English official guidance to interpret alerts.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Brandrisk Ute app icon

Brandrisk Ute

Official English-capable fire-risk and fire-ban tool for camping, hiking, grilling and other outdoor activities in Sweden.

Pro tip: Check the exact location immediately before using any flame. Local bans and protected-area rules override a general low-risk forecast.
