Slovenia

Use local transport tools, keep bus cash, and trust official mountain data

Slovenia is straightforward for visitors, but its useful apps are fragmented by city and transport operator.

What to know before you go to Slovenia

Uber is not conventional ride-hailing: in Ljubljana it dispatches licensed taxis, and the physical meter determines the final fare. Bolt offers scooters, not car rides. Taxi Metro is the strongest local taxi app, while Wolt is the only broad delivery platform. In Ljubljana, the Urbana app can pay for LPP buses and includes 90-minute transfers; a tapped Visa or Mastercard works too, but each boarding is charged separately.

Intercity bus ticketing is less consistent, and most Arriva routes still require cash on board. Drivers should use the official Promet+ app, buy motorway e-vignettes only from DARS, and expect extensive 2026 roadworks. For Alpine trips, use official trail and weather sources rather than a general map alone. Call 112 for medical, fire, mountain or cave rescue emergencies and 113 for police.

Taxi Metro app icon

Taxi MetroEssential

Best local taxi app for Ljubljana, with pickup tracking, a fare estimate and in-app card payment.

Pro tip: Use the estimate to compare before booking and keep a backup for late-night or airport pickups. Confirm any fixed airport fare and never accept an unverified station solicitation.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber app icon

Uber

Familiar app for licensed taxis in Ljubljana, but the physical taximeter sets the final fare rather than the app estimate.

Pro tip: Treat the quoted price as an estimate, watch for cancellations and compare Taxi Metro. Uber is not a nationwide private-driver service in Slovenia.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Wizi app icon

Wizi

Local taxi backup with verified current service pages for Ljubljana, Maribor and Kamnik.

Pro tip: Confirm the app quote and payment method before moving. Card acceptance can vary, and recent users report occasional fare and driver-quality problems.

Food Delivery1 app · 1 essential

Wolt app icon

WoltEssential

Slovenia's only broad delivery app, serving food, groceries and shops across 18 current operating zones.

Pro tip: Set the exact pin first, compare the final total with the restaurant's own offer, and document missing or damaged items before contacting support.

Messaging1 app

WhatsApp app icon

WhatsApp

Optional contact channel for confirmed accommodation, tour, restaurant and transfer providers that publish a WhatsApp number.

Pro tip: Verify changed payment or pickup instructions through the original booking channel, and never share registration or banking codes in chat.

Navigation2 apps · 1 essential

View Navigation guide→
Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

Best general map for urban addresses, ordinary driving and initial transit planning, with downloadable offline areas.

Pro tip: Download the area, but use official traffic and mountain sources for live closures. Never treat a suggested alpine path as verified or safe.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
M

maPZS

Official Alpine Association web app for maintained Slovenian mountain trails, difficulty, closures, warnings and huts.

Pro tip: Add it to your home screen and check the route again before departure. Pair it with official weather and closures, and do not treat any map as a safety guarantee.

Transit3 apps · 1 essential

View Transit guide→
Urbana app icon

UrbanaEssential

Official Ljubljana app for LPP bus fares, 90-minute transfers, trip planning, arrivals, parking and the castle funicular.

Pro tip: Enable Bluetooth, data and location, validate every boarding and keep the app ready for inspection. A direct bank-card tap is easier for one ride but gives no free transfer.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
BicikeLJ app icon

BicikeLJ

Official Ljubljana bike-share app for finding docks, subscribing, releasing bikes and confirming returns.

Pro tip: Inspect the bike before riding and wait for the return confirmation at the dock. The first 60 minutes of each trip are included with an active subscription.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Slomet app icon

Slomet

Independent national planner combining buses, trains, stops and available live positions from official open-data feeds.

Pro tip: Use it to discover connections, not to buy tickets. Confirm critical departures and platform changes with the operator because live data can fall back to the timetable.

Language1 app

View Language guide→
Google Translate app icon

Google Translate

Optional fallback for Slovenian signs, menus and short exchanges, with camera and downloadable-language tools.

Pro tip: Download and test Slovenian before leaving Wi-Fi, save important addresses in the original spelling, and use a human interpreter for consequential matters.

Grem z vlakom app icon

Grem z vlakomEssential

Official Slovenian Railways app for domestic train tickets, timetables, delays, obstacles and replacement services.

Pro tip: Check disruptions before buying because most app tickets are non-refundable. Keep the ticket code bright and use the SŽ website or station if the app is incompatible.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Pelji.se app icon

Pelji.se

Official Arriva app for Slovenian bus routes, transfers, future timetables and available live vehicle positions.

Pro tip: This is a planner, not a ticket wallet. Confirm the boarding point and carry cash because most Arriva routes still do not accept cards on board.

Utilities1 app

Promet+ app icon

Promet+

Official live traffic app for Slovenian road conditions, incidents, roadworks, cameras, travel times and toll information.

Pro tip: Use it for live roads, not vignette purchase. Buy only from the official DARS shop, check the plate and toll class, and retain the receipt.
