Portugal does not have one visitor ticket or tap rule. Lisbon and Porto each work well once you choose the local fare system before the first gate or vehicle.
In Lisbon, tap a bank card for metro-only travel or load a reusable local card when buses, trams, ferries or suburban transport enter the plan. In Porto, use an Andante ticket or visitor pass across the network and validate at every boarding or change. Isolated bank-card readers and onboard purchases are separate products, so one tap cannot be assumed to work everywhere.

Lisbon Metro accepts contactless bank cards and mobile wallets across the network. One credential pays for one passenger, and the same physical card or device must be used at entry and exit. A plastic card and its phone wallet version count as different credentials.1
That metro tap doesn't become a multimodal pass. For mixed local travel, a Navegante occasional card can hold Carris and Metro tickets, zapping value or a 24-hour product. In 2026 the Carris and Metro single is €1.90 and the Carris and Metro 24-hour ticket is €7.25, before the reusable card cost.23
Carris also accepts contactless payment for an onboard single ticket on its vehicles. That purchase is its own fare product. It should not be confused with Lisbon Metro contactless or a transferable Navegante ticket.3
Andante Tour offers unlimited travel for 24 or 72 consecutive hours across the Andante network. It is deliberately simple for visitors and has no zone calculation, but it still needs validation when boarding and when changing vehicles or lines.4
Porto's bank-card contactless program remains limited to selected Metro stations and STCP line 500. Separately, all STCP buses now sell a €2.50 onboard ticket by contactless card. Neither option is a universal substitute for an Andante product across a multimodal itinerary.78
Anda can calculate fares after travel, but direct validation is for compatible Android phones with NFC, Bluetooth, location and internet enabled. The iPhone version can manage and top up cards but does not provide the same phone-as-ticket flow. Carry a physical Andante option if your trip cannot tolerate a setup failure.56
CP requires validation before travel for relevant Lisbon and Porto urban tickets and cards. A dead phone, failed app or forgotten tap does not automatically make the journey valid. Leave enough time at an unfamiliar station to find the correct validator before boarding.9
Keep each passenger's credential consistent through a gated journey. If entry used a phone wallet, do not present the underlying plastic card at exit. If inspection occurs, show the exact card, device or ticket that was validated.17
If contactless payment or an app fails, use a staffed machine or ticket office before boarding. In Lisbon, buy the appropriate fare on the local reusable card; in Porto, buy an Andante card or visitor ticket. For CP trains, obtain and validate the rail ticket required for that journey.249
