OVpay accepts compatible contactless Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and V PAY debit or credit cards, including foreign cards, across trains, buses, trams and metros. Tap in and out with the exact same physical card or the exact same wallet device. A phone, watch and plastic card linked to one account count as different cards. Each traveler needs a separate payment method.
The fare is second class without a subscription discount. A few foreign products, including some virtual cards, can be rejected, so carry a second card. Use 9292 for nationwide door-to-door planning and live operator data. Its e-tickets accept major cards and mobile wallets, but they are not automatically the cheapest choice.
Official 9292 guidance confirms that e-ticket pricing can differ from OVpay and may include service fees; current traveler reports show short journeys costing more as e-tickets. Tap instead unless you need a specific ticket. The GVB app matters mainly in Amsterdam when you want a GVB hourly, day, multi-day or group ticket. Those products do not automatically cover NS trains or other regional operators.
The OVpay app is optional: tapping works without it, while the app helps confirm check-ins, review charges and correct a missed check-in or checkout. Always read the gate or validator screen before walking away.
