Ride Hailing Apps in Netherlands

Uber is the main visitor-facing ride app, with Bolt as the practical second choice. Neither is an unlicensed private-driver service: Dutch rules require the driver, company and vehicle to be registered for taxi work, including blue plates. Both offer English, accept foreign phone numbers and international Visa or Mastercard cards, and require no Dutch ID or bank account. Uber coverage is broadest in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven, with Bolt strongest in the large western cities. Supply becomes sparse in small towns, where a local taxi reservation is safer. Schiphol has an official app-taxi pickup location for Uber and Bolt, separate from parts of the ordinary taxi flow, so follow airport signs and the app pin. Fares are app based, but licensed street taxis use regulated maximum tariffs. Lyft does not operate, and Freenow does not provide the same Dutch passenger network. No current public source proves overwhelming market share for either Uber or Bolt, so Uber's recommendation is based on coverage and visitor usability. Dutch rail is often faster between cities, and app rides should not be treated as an intercity default.
