What to know before you go to Malta

Bolt is the most useful first ride app, while eCabs is a sensible scheduled backup and Uber is mainly a third price check. Buses reach most visitor areas, but traffic, diversions, crowding and unreliable live data mean the Tallinja app is guidance rather than a promise. As checked in August 2026, a summer day-bus ticket costs €2.50 and lasts two hours; buy it on board with cash, a contactless card or a phone, or compare the physical visitor passes for heavier use. Gozo Channel is the vehicle and foot-passenger ferry from Ċirkewwa, while Gozo Highspeed is the passenger fast ferry from Valletta.

Gozo Channel has no reservations or priority boarding. Anyone landing at Blue Lagoon on Comino needs a free timed QR pass from the official portal. Malta's accommodation eco contribution rose on 1 July 2026 to €1.50 per night for guests aged 18 or older, capped at €22.50 per visit. Call 112 in an emergency; the separate mass-alert system was still being developed in 2026.

Ride Hailing3 apps · 1 essential

Bolt app icon

BoltEssential

The most practical first ride app in Malta, with broad coverage and usually the strongest starting point for price and pickup time.

Pro tip: At the airport, use the pickup point shown in the app. Compare the complete quote with eCabs, Uber and the official prepaid white taxi when demand is high.

eCabs app icon

eCabs

Malta-based licensed ride service with on-demand and scheduled trips, useful as a local backup for airports and harder pickups.

Pro tip: Schedule consequential trips early and check that a driver is assigned. Prebooking improves the plan but does not remove traffic or supply risk.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber app icon

Uber

Active Malta ride-hailing option that is useful for a third live quote when Bolt or eCabs is expensive, delayed or unavailable.

Pro tip: Compare price, pickup time and the actual assigned car. Do not assume Uber is cheaper or that a visible estimate guarantees acceptance.

Food Delivery2 apps · 1 essential

Wolt app icon

WoltEssential

The best first delivery check in Malta, with restaurant and retail listings on the main island and a separate Gozo marketplace.

Pro tip: Set the exact entrance before ordering and compare the final total with the restaurant's direct menu. Delivery estimates and refunds are not guaranteed.

Bolt Food app icon

Bolt Food

Useful second delivery marketplace for restaurants and promotions whose live choice depends on the selected Maltese address.

Pro tip: Compare the complete basket after menu markups, service charges and delivery fees. Choose pickup or a nearby venue for a time-critical meal.

Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

Best general map for Maltese addresses, walking and driving, with useful but non-authoritative bus routing and offline road maps.

Pro tip: Download Malta and Gozo and save exact entrances. Use Tallinja and service alerts for buses, then follow posted diversions and signs on the ground.

Transit1 app · 1 essential

View Transit guide→
Tallinja app icon

TallinjaEssential

Official Malta and Gozo bus planner with live vehicle positions, service information and management of physical visitor travel cards.

Pro tip: Use it with Google Maps and posted notices. A phone app is not itself a universal bus ticket, and a live position does not guarantee an on-time or uncrowded bus.

Intercity Transport1 app · 1 essential

View Intercity Transport guide→
Gozo Channel app icon

Gozo ChannelEssential

Official app for the Ċirkewwa to Mġarr vehicle ferry, with schedules, disruption notices, traffic cameras and live ferry positions.

Pro tip: Use it for operations, not a reservation. Tickets do not secure priority, boarding is first come, first served and validation normally occurs at Mġarr.

Utilities1 app

112mt app icon

112mt

Optional Government of Malta emergency companion for calling or texting 112, location support and non-urgent incident information.

Pro tip: Set it up before you need it, but call 112 directly for immediate danger. Do not confuse it with the separate mass-alert system still being developed in 2026.
