Hungary is straightforward once you separate Budapest's BKK fare system from national MÁV rail and interurban buses. The costly mistakes are usually an unvalidated ticket or the wrong fare for airport bus 100E.
Use BudapestGO for routes and BKK tickets inside Budapest, then use MÁVPlusz for journeys beyond the capital. A 24-hour or 72-hour Budapest travelcard is often the least stressful choice for a busy city stay. If you buy singles, validate each one correctly. Pay and GO isn't a citywide contactless system: it is limited to the four metro lines and airport bus 100E.

BudapestGO is BKK's official planner and mobile-ticket channel for the capital. Use it for live city routes, service information and BKK fare products. The displayed route still needs the correct ticket and validation; the app screen alone doesn't prove payment.26
For travel beyond Budapest, move to MÁV's website or the MÁVPlusz app. MÁV sells the national journey and displays the service-specific conditions. A city travelcard covers only its stated Budapest services, even when the national route begins inside the capital.10118
If step-free access matters, ask BudapestGO for an accessible route and inspect the exact departure. The planner uses current vehicle data and marks low-floor service. Confirm the marked departure because access can vary by station and vehicle.1
As checked on 25 August 2026, a Budapest single costs 500 forints in advance and an onboard single costs 700 forints where onboard sale is offered. A standard single is intended for one uninterrupted trip, apart from permitted changes between metro lines. For a bus-to-metro or tram-to-bus itinerary, use a timed ticket or another product that covers the change.34
The 30-minute and 90-minute tickets allow transfers inside their validity rules. For repeated sightseeing trips, the 24-hour travelcard costs 2,750 forints and runs for 24 hours from the selected start time, rather than ending at midnight. Compare that with singles before buying by habit.38
Validate a paper single or timed ticket at the station entrance before a metro journey, or immediately after boarding a surface vehicle. Inspectors can check at any point. Paper travelcards and passes are shown rather than punched, but the start time and eligibility still need to be valid.4
For a mobile single, scan the displayed code or use the supported NFC validation point before entering the metro or boarding. On front-door boarding routes, show the moving validation image to the driver. Mobile tickets need an active data connection for the required validation steps, so do not wait until the vehicle arrives to discover a flat battery or no data.6
BKK's Pay and GO readers buy and validate a single ticket with one bank-card tap at all four metro lines and on 100E. Readers exist only at those marked services rather than across ordinary buses and trams. Daily best-fare capping isn't part of the system.5
The card or device used at Pay and GO becomes the proof of purchase. Use the same physical card, phone or watch if inspected. At metro readers, each transaction buys one ticket; 100E readers can handle tickets for up to five passengers under BKK's stated procedure.5
Bus 100E runs directly between Budapest Airport and the city centre. Its standard airport ticket costs 2,500 forints and excludes an onward transfer. BKK also sells a 1,000-forint 100E add-on, but only for holders of the passes BKK explicitly lists; an ordinary BKK travelcard doesn't automatically qualify.7
Bus 200E uses ordinary BKK fares and connects the airport with the M3 metro at Kőbánya-Kispest during normal service. Late at night it runs toward Határ út for night-network connections. It is usually the cheaper route, but it requires a transfer and the fare product must cover that change.93
MÁVPlusz sells domestic train and coach tickets, day products and passes. A purchased ticket can be displayed in the app when coverage drops, but save the journey details and keep the device charged before leaving the city.10
Enter passenger details accurately and check the route, date, departure, train and class shown. Some services require a supplement or seat reservation. A ticket priced for one named journey limits boarding to the conditions printed on it. Carry the identification or discount document used for the purchase.11
If BudapestGO, NFC validation or a bank-card reader fails, buy a paper ticket or travelcard from a BKK machine or customer centre before entering the paid area. For a MÁV journey, use the official website, station machine or ticket office. Keep a charged phone and a paper or physical-card fallback, and never board with only a purchase receipt or an unvalidated single.4611
