What to know about Ride Hailing in Hungary

Bolt is the leading Budapest taxi app, while Uber returned in June 2024 as a licensed taxi product operated with Főtaxi. Uber dispatches yellow metered taxis, not private drivers, and remains limited to Budapest as of July 2026. Főtaxi is the official Budapest Airport taxi partner, and City Taxi is another established app. Budapest sets the same official taxi tariff across licensed companies, so no app is systematically cheaper on the meter. The airport lists a HUF 1,100 base fee and HUF 440 per kilometre as of July 2026, with a typical airport-to-centre trip around HUF 10,800 as of July 2026 depending on traffic. Bolt and Uber can still differ through availability, cancellation behavior or an app promotion, but the legal meter controls the normal fare. All four have English booking or operator support, accept foreign phone numbers and require no Hungarian ID or bank account. Uber and Bolt accept international Visa and Mastercard cards. Főtaxi vehicles have card terminals, while City Taxi card availability should be selected or confirmed. At Ferenc Liszt International Airport, use the official Főtaxi booths outside the two arrivals halls or the current app pickup instruction. Ignore drivers soliciting inside. Uber and Bolt do not provide reliable service in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Győr or other Hungarian cities as of July 2026. Outside Budapest, call a local licensed taxi rather than relying on these apps.
