Keep Uber as an optional English-friendly fallback and choose the Taxi product when you want a licensed Hong Kong taxi dispatched through the app. Taxi rides use the regulated meter, with statutory surcharges where applicable, unless the selected product clearly states a different fare arrangement. Uber also displays private-car products, but Hong Kong is still implementing its new ride-hailing licensing regime. In August 2026 the Transport Department expected to invite platform-licence applications, and a private vehicle still required the relevant permit to carry passengers for hire.
Do not describe every private Uber ride as fully licensed during this transition. FlyTaxi is the current local licensed-taxi alternative. Uber announced its acquisition in May 2026 and said FlyTaxi would continue operating normally, but ownership makes it a less independent comparison than it appears. HKTaxi is not current; its users were directed to Uber after the app closed.
Since 1 April 2026 every taxi must provide at least one QR and one non-QR electronic payment method, but recent passengers still report broken, covered or refused readers. Carry small HKD as a backup, ask about payment before departure and request a receipt. Do not pay cash again if an in-app product already charged the card. Confirm the colour and permitted operating area of a street taxi, the plate, pickup pin and destination.
At the airport use the official taxi rank or the app's designated pickup instructions. During a typhoon, black rainstorm or major disruption, transport can stop; an app quote is not proof that travel is safe or available.
