Hong Kong makes a simple MTR ride easy: a foreign contactless bank card can open the right gate. The decision changes when the itinerary adds a bus, tram, ferry or Light Rail. For that mixed network, Octopus remains the credential that asks the fewest questions.
Use the Octopus App for Tourists on a compatible iPhone if a supported foreign card completes setup. Otherwise, buy a physical card: a sold Tourist Octopus at the airport, or an adult On-Loan Octopus later at an eligible MTR station. A bank card is a sound no-setup choice when the itinerary is confined to MTR and Airport Express, but it doesn't cover every light-rail or bus leg and misses some fare benefits. Before buying an airport or day pass, compare it with the exact rides you will take.

The Octopus App for Tourists can issue a card on an iPhone X or later or Apple Watch Series 3 or later. A new card carries a HK$50 deposit and at least HK$100 of stored value. The tourist app accepts non-Hong Kong Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards through Apple Pay, or a linked non-Hong Kong Mastercard.2
Once issued, the phone behaves like an Octopus, not like an ordinary Apple Pay bank card. It taps Octopus readers without opening the app and works at more than 180,000 transport and retail acceptance points. Payment itself does not need internet, although issuing the card and requesting a refund do.23
Supported Huawei phones are a limited exception to the usual Android advice. Huawei Pay Octopus for visitors requires a compatible device, a Huawei Account registered in Mainland China, Macao or Singapore and an eligible UnionPay card issued in the same region.7
A standard adult On-Loan Octopus currently costs HK$200 upfront: a HK$50 refundable deposit, subject to applicable return fees, plus HK$150 stored value. Airport Station does not sell it; buy one later at an eligible MTR Customer Service Centre. Airport outlets instead sell Tourist Octopus variants. Some include stored value and some do not, so check the package and add value before the first tap. Their card purchase cost is not refundable, although remaining stored value can be. A Standard On-Loan card is transferable and not tied to the holder's identity. Unless it has an eligible linked service such as AAVS, the normal lost-card service does not apply.45689
Return a physical Octopus at an MTR Customer Service Centre before leaving. A remaining value below HK$1,000 can be refunded immediately. An On-Loan card can incur a fee of HK$11 or 1% of the balance, whichever is higher, when returned within 90 days, after five or fewer payment transactions, or with more than HK$1,000 remaining.9
Mobile Octopus refunds are requested in the tourist app and return to the payment method used for top-up. Cancellation within 90 days costs HK$11, and the operator says the credit can take six to eight weeks. Do not load a large final balance merely because it can be refunded.2
MTR accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay credit or debit cards, except UnionPay debit, at designated gates. The same scheme covers Airport Express. Overseas cards are generally accepted, but issuer approval varies and fares settle in Hong Kong dollars.10
Use the same physical card or the same phone or watch to enter and exit. A plastic card and its wallet version are different credentials. The bank-card fare matches the Adult Octopus fare, but other concessions and the public transport fare subsidy don't apply. The scheme also excludes the northwestern light-rail network and MTR feeder buses.10
One subtle penalty appears at Tsim Sha Tsui and East Tsim Sha Tsui. That out-of-gate interchange is charged as two separate bank-card journeys. Octopus is the cleaner choice when an itinerary uses that connection or extends beyond the MTR-only network.10
Airport Express runs from Hong Kong Station to the airport in about 24 minutes, with the operator advertising trains about every 10 minutes. Since 31 May 2026, its gates have accepted Octopus, single-journey tickets, QR tickets and contactless bank cards.1314
Groups of two to four travelling together should pause before tapping. MTR's Ride Together ticket is sold at Airport Express Customer Service Centres for same-day group travel. Current per-person prices range from HK$42.50 from Tsing Yi in a group of four to HK$85 from Hong Kong Station in a group of two.13
Making a same-day airport round trip? MTR offers a free return journey when the same Octopus, contactless card, QR code or Same Day Return ticket is used. An Octopus must not add more than nine transaction records between the relevant entries and exits. A contactless card or e-wallet QR code loses the offer if it pays for another journey between the two Airport Express legs.15
Cityflyer is the direct bus alternative. It accepts exact Hong Kong-dollar cash, Octopus, major contactless bank cards, common mobile wallets and selected transit QR codes. Compare the route to your hotel, not just the headline travel time.16
The Adult Tourist Day Pass costs HK$75 and gives 24 consecutive hours on MTR, Light Rail and MTR Bus. Purchase requires proof of non-resident status and a Hong Kong stay of less than 14 days. It excludes Airport Express, East Rail First Class and journeys to or from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau. Price the actual rides first; convenience alone doesn't make it cheaper than stored value.11
Light Rail has open platforms, but not optional validation. Tap Octopus at the Entry Fare Processor before boarding, finish within two hours and tap again at the Exit Fare Processor. A valid Light Rail single ticket is the non-Octopus alternative. The published surcharge for riding without a valid Light Rail ticket is HK$370.12
East Rail First Class has a different trap. Before entering the compartment, validate the same Octopus or bank-card credential used at the station gate on a First Class Processor. There is no onboard upgrade, and an unvalidated First Class ride can trigger a HK$1,000 surcharge or prosecution.12
High Speed Rail from Hong Kong West Kowloon uses a real-name e-ticket linked to the identification document entered at purchase. Tickets go on sale up to 15 days before departure. At the station, the same passport or accepted document handles ticket verification and gate access.17
The operator says departure procedures normally take about 30 to 45 minutes and recommends extra time for passport holders, weekends, holidays and the last train. An ordinary MTR gate tap is not an HSR ticket, and buying the separate ticket does not establish immigration eligibility. HKeMobility can show live control-point status for other boundary routes.171
If a gate rejects the card, stop switching between the plastic card and its phone version. Show station staff the exact credential used to enter. Buy a single-journey ticket if the issuer keeps declining. On Light Rail, obtain a valid ticket before boarding. For an airport bus, carry enough Hong Kong dollars for the exact fare even when planning to pay electronically.101216
The transaction is incomplete. Follow the operator's instruction and tap the same device on the same reader again until it beeps and shows the remaining value. Octopus says the second tap will not cause a double deduction.
