Offline mode can provide driving directions only when the complete route is inside the downloaded area; it does not provide walking, cycling or public-transport directions, live traffic or alternative driving routes. Save the exact accommodation, fuel stops and parking entrance, not only a place name. Google Maps is not an authority on Icelandic road openings, vehicle suitability or weather.
Before every drive, compare the route with the official Umferdin map from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, SafeTravel warnings and Icelandic Met Office forecasts. Travelers continue to report contradictions between Google or third-party apps and current official road status. The app currently called Færð & Veður is a private product, not an official Road Administration app. It republishes official data and may be a convenient view, but recent reports show that it can lag the authoritative website, so it is not retained as an essential recommendation.
Never drive around a closure, through a barrier or onto a road your rental agreement excludes. F-roads are seasonal highland roads, not ordinary shortcuts. SafeTravel warns that not every four-wheel-drive vehicle is suitable, river conditions can change quickly, and insurance does not cover river-crossing damage. Off-road driving is strictly prohibited.
For hiking or the highlands, use an appropriate offline topographic map, current local advice and a travel plan; a road-navigation app is not a wilderness safety system.
