What to know about Ride Hailing in Iceland

Hreyfill is the established local taxi app and the safest first install. Hopp added licensed taxi booking in Reykjavík and is the useful comparison as of June 4, 2026. No public audited app trip-share exists, but Hreyfill's fleet and long-standing dispatch network make it the practical leader. Both apps dispatch licensed, metered taxis rather than private drivers. They cover Reykjavík and the capital region, including Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and Mosfellsbær. Hreyfill also handles Keflavík International Airport reservations, while ordinary on-demand supply at the airport can vary. Hopp and Hreyfill offer English. Foreign mobile numbers can work, and neither requires Icelandic ID or a local bank account for a normal passenger booking. International Visa and Mastercard cards are widely accepted in Iceland, but confirm whether the card is charged in the app or in the taxi. Neither app is reliably cheaper because regulated taxi meters determine the fare. Keflavík Airport to central Reykjavík commonly costs about ISK 20,000 to ISK 30,000 as of mid-2026, making the airport bus much cheaper for one or two travelers. Uber, Bolt, Lyft and inDrive do not operate. App taxi supply is weak or absent outside the capital region, so arrange rental cars, buses, tours or local taxi companies for Akureyri, the south coast, Westfjords and rural destinations.
