A short-stay visitor should arrive with at least one physical Visa or Mastercard, a separately stored backup and modest rupee cash. Cards work at many hotels, formal shops and restaurants, yet small merchants, drivers and ticket counters may accept only cash or UPI. NPCI's UPI One World framework allows eligible international visitors to obtain a rupee wallet without an Indian bank account. Mony and Cheq advertise onboarding with a foreign number, passport and visa plus funding from an international card.
This can be useful on a longer QR-heavy trip, but it is optional. Eligibility, identity checks, activation or loading fees, exchange costs, top-up limits and refund procedures differ. Cheq requires in-person verification and restricts payment to registered merchant QRs. Tourist wallets generally cannot pay personal peer-to-peer QRs, which are still used by some drivers, guesthouses and small sellers.
Confirm current fees before loading and add only what you expect to spend. Do not let anyone enter an amount for you, never reveal an OTP or UPI PIN, and verify the recipient name before approving. Keep cash because a QR logo does not prove that your visitor wallet can pay it. If a terminal offers home-currency conversion, compare the shown rate and your issuer's fees before accepting.
Use only authorised money changers and keep ATM or exchange receipts if you may reconvert unused rupees.
