What to know about Navigation in Japan

Google Maps is the best general planner for place search, walking and most urban rail journeys. Japan Travel by NAVITIME is a useful specialist comparison for complex rail itineraries, platform detail and routes filtered for a Japan Rail Pass or regional pass. Its current app can retain up to 50 recently searched routes for offline viewing, while some stronger route and disruption features require a paid plan. Neither app is perfect. Google Maps can choose a station entrance with stairs, underestimate a large-station transfer, or direct a traveler to the wrong side of a multilevel complex. Current traveler reports still flag difficulties inside Shinjuku and Tokyo stations. Compare routes when a transfer is tight and follow live station signs, staff and operator notices. Save the hotel, exact airport terminal, station exit, luggage location and Japanese-script address. Take screenshots of critical routes and tickets. Google Maps offline downloads depend on the area and, even where available, do not provide live transit disruption or normal offline transit planning. Japanese stations can have many exits and underground corridors, so choose the exit number before leaving the platform. Rural buses may run only a few times per day, and mountain roads or trails require official seasonal and weather information. A general map does not prove a trail is open. For driving, follow road signs, toll and parking rules rather than an app shortcut. Add a substantial buffer around the last train and any international flight.
