Japan's ticket gates are easy once the right card is in your hand. The difficult decision now comes before the first tap: iPhone, Android and even the railway operator change which setup actually works.
On a compatible iPhone, add Suica directly in Apple Wallet unless the English help and JR East extras in its visitor app matter. On Android, buy the local physical IC card after arrival; at Narita or Haneda, that can be TOURIST PASMO or Welcome Suica. A contactless bank card is enough for some Kanto journeys, but it is still a patchwork rather than a national replacement.

JR East's 180-day visitor Suica app for eligible iPhone and Apple Watch users, with no Mobile Suica membership.
Welcome Suica Mobile solves a problem that Apple had already partly solved. Apple Wallet can issue Suica, PASMO, ICOCA or TOICA directly on an iPhone 8 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 3 or later, with current software. Downloading JR East's app is optional for ordinary local rides.2
JR East's app earns its place through selected Greater Tokyo passes, local Green Car tickets, and its route into JR-EAST Train Reservation for reserved Shinkansen and limited-express seats. That e-ticket flow asks for a separate reservation account and credit-card purchase. It isn't one universal railway account.1
The visitor product sits beside a much larger resident system. JR East reported 124.35 million Suica cards issued, including 42.14 million Mobile Suica cards, by March 2026. A regular Wallet card avoids the visitor product's 180-day clock, which makes it the cleaner default for many iPhone owners.41
Since 25 March 2026, contactless bank cards have worked across 54 lines and 729 stations run by 11 Kanto railway operators. The network covers all Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines, plus journeys such as Keikyu from Haneda Airport Terminal 3 to Asakusa. At launch, it accepted seven brands: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover and UnionPay.67
That sounds like the end of Suica. It isn't. JR East is outside this group, coverage on some operators is partial, and a rider cannot stay inside the bank-card journey past an uncovered line. The same physical card or device must open and close the trip. A card stored on a phone and its matching plastic card count as different credentials.6
For a direct Haneda-to-Asakusa ride, a bank card now avoids setup. The same plan breaks when the next leg is JR's Yamanote Line. If the itinerary crosses operators or cities, one IC card still requires less thought.6
An Android phone bought abroad still cannot issue the visitor Suica today. JR East's April 2026 announcement targets certain overseas Samsung Galaxy models released from 2027, with service planned for the first half of 2027. Regions and compatible models remain pending. That's a roadmap, not a current trip option.51
TOURIST PASMO made the airport fallback straightforward in May 2026. Keikyu sells it at Haneda Airport's Terminal 1 and 2 Station and Terminal 3 Station in values from ¥1,000 to ¥10,000, with credit cards accepted at the machines. Keisei sells one ¥2,000 version at its information centers in Narita Terminals 1 and 2. Each card lasts 28 days, has no deposit, and cannot be reissued if lost.8
Physical Welcome Suica remains the JR East alternative, sold at counters and machines rather than everywhere. On 21 August 2026 the list named Narita, Haneda Terminal 3, JR East Travel Service Centers at Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Ueno, Yokohama and Sendai, plus JAPAN RAIL CAFE TOKYO and Takanawa Gateway, with several other locations marked temporarily suspended.9
Suica works for local taps in ICOCA territory around Kyoto and Osaka wherever the national IC logo is shown. What it cannot do is carry one stored-fare journey across separate IC areas. JR East's own example is the Tokyo metropolitan area to the Sendai area. End the first trip and re-enter, or buy a ticket for the crossing.10
The visitor card does offer Touch de Go for non-reserved seats on JR East Shinkansen routes, including Tokyo to Niigata and Tokyo to Joetsu Myoko. It doesn't turn Tokyo to Kyoto on JR Central's Tokaido Shinkansen into a stored-value ride. That corridor needs a Shinkansen reservation or ticket, even when an IC card is linked for gate entry.1112
As checked in August 2026, JR East suspends visitor-app registration and top-ups from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time. Apple cautions that many Wallet card functions are unavailable from midnight to 5:00 a.m. A late-night rejection can be the clock rather than the bank.1415
Foreign-card outcomes remain mixed. In February 2026, one person reported that a Visa stopped topping up while a second Visa still worked. In August 2026, an Australian report succeeded only after changing both card and amount. Those reports don't establish a brand rule. Stop repeated retries, check the maintenance window, then switch to cash at a participating convenience store, Seven Bank or Lawson Bank ATM, or tray-style station charger.171813
The phone itself is the ticket, but low-power shutdown and switching the phone off are different problems. On supported iPhones, an Express Mode card may keep working in power reserve for up to five hours after the phone says it needs charging. It will not work if you switch the phone off yourself, and the reserve eventually expires. Carry enough yen for a paper ticket either way.163
At a closed gate, stop tapping. Show station staff the same phone or card used to enter and let them clear the trip. If the battery, top-up or area boundary is the problem, buy a paper ticket and keep enough yen for the full fare.
