What to know about Transit in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan does not have one national city-transit app or payment rule. ONAY is the main system in Almaty and also serves Karaganda, Saran, Balkhash, Temirtau, Taldykorgan, Ust-Kamenogorsk and other participating cities. It shows routes and vehicles and can manage a virtual or physical ONAY card. Avtobys serves Astana and more than 20 cities, but its role in Almaty is still route-specific during the current rollout. Check the vehicle and local authority rather than assuming either logo works everywhere. The apps are useful for routes and live arrivals, but neither is a dependable foreign-payment solution. Recent travelers report that foreign cards stopped working in ONAY and that Avtobys registration, wallet top-up or QR payment can fail with non-Kazakhstan numbers or cards. In Almaty, a physical ONAY card bought locally and topped up with tenge is often the safest visitor fallback. In Astana, official tourist transport cards are sold at the airport without app registration, and contactless bank-card payment is also advertised on city buses. A foreign card can still fail, so confirm the current fallback. Validate every ride using the method accepted on that vehicle, retain the ticket or app confirmation, and do not assume cash handed to a driver is valid. Use 2GIS, ONAY or Avtobys for routing, but check posted notices during system migrations or disruptions.
