Translation and language tools, curated for travelers visiting Pakistan.
Urdu is Pakistan's national language and the most useful single local language for travel across provinces. English is used for many official purposes and is common in larger hotels, airports, tourism businesses and among many urban residents, but fluency cannot be assumed with every driver, market vendor or remote guesthouse. Pakistan is multilingual, with Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Balochi and many northern languages used locally. Learn a few polite Urdu phrases rather than assuming Arabic is spoken. Google Translate is a useful support tool for typed text, speech and camera translation, but it is not a substitute for a human interpreter in a medical, police, legal or permit situation. Download Urdu and the traveler's language before departure and test offline text and camera functions on the actual phone. Google notes that offline and camera availability differs by language and device, so verify that the download icon is present. Urdu uses a right-to-left script. Saving the destination in Urdu plus a Roman Urdu version can help a driver or station worker even when the camera struggles with stylized signs. Keep screenshots for the hotel address, dietary restriction, medication, emergency contact and next transport terminal. For a severe allergy, write a precise card that distinguishes the ingredient from a preference and have a fluent person check it. Automatic translation can miss regional vocabulary, politeness and context. Speak in short sentences, avoid slang and confirm numbers by showing them on screen. In the northern regions, a guide or accommodation host may bridge several local languages more reliably than an app. Do not hand an unlocked phone to a stranger when showing a translation. Hold it yourself or use a screenshot.
