Download each destination area before leaving reliable service and save the accommodation, terminal and official meeting points. Offline maps can preserve your position and some driving directions, but they do not retain transit directions, walking routes, live traffic or alternate routes. That limitation matters in mountain regions, national parks and long rural road sections. Colombia's terrain makes a short distance on the map a poor estimate of travel time.

Landslides, weather, road works and security conditions can change a route, so check the road operator, bus company, accommodation or INVÍAS before an intercity drive. Do not let a navigation app reroute you onto an isolated road solely because it appears faster. For a national park or remote hike, use the park's current official access conditions, a qualified guide where required and an appropriate offline topographic map. Google Maps is not a wilderness safety tool, and an old user photo or track does not prove that a trail is open.

Verify the department and municipality because repeated street names and similar town names can place the pin many hours away. In cities, set the route while inside a building or vehicle, use audio instructions and keep the phone away from an open window. For public transport, combine Google Maps with the responsible city's official system information. A route can be geographically correct while ignoring a temporary station closure or the payment medium you need.
