Uber and Bolt are practical in Croatia's cities and main coastal destinations, but app coverage is not the same as a guaranteed car. Summer demand, islands, pedestrian old towns and early airport trips all require a real backup.
Install Uber and Bolt before arrival and compare the complete live quote. Keep Wizi or a licensed local taxi number for islands and smaller markets. For a flight or ferry, reserve early but still keep enough time to switch to the official rank or a hotel-booked taxi.

Uber's official Croatia directory spans Zagreb, major Adriatic destinations and many surrounding municipalities. Bolt publishes a much tighter list of nine markets: Dubrovnik, Karlovac, Osijek, Pula, Rijeka, Šibenik, Split, Zadar and Zagreb. Treat the directories as a starting point. Test the real pickup and destination for live supply.48
A municipality page does not prove that a driver will accept an island, village or late-night request. Wizi states that services and vehicle types vary by region, while its June 2026 Krk announcement explicitly covers the entire island. That makes Wizi useful on Krk. It doesn't turn every Croatian island into an app market.1213
A new Zagreb option appeared on 19 August 2026. When a Verne-operated autonomous vehicle is available in a supported central area, an ordinary UberX or Comfort request can be matched with it. A licensed operator remains behind the wheel during the launch phase, and the app identifies the vehicle. This is a limited Uber match in Zagreb, not separate nationwide coverage.7
Croatian taxi transport requires a carrier licence and a local permit for the area where the passenger is picked up. A metered vehicle must run its approved meter and display its tariff. An app-priced trip must show the passenger a maximum price and planned route in advance, and the app must remain active during the service.2
This is not merely a paperwork distinction. In summer 2026, national inspectors removed twelve vehicles from service during coastal checks and cited missing local permits, unlicensed vehicles and missing driver or vehicle cards among the common violations. Use the car recorded in the app or a visibly marked licensed taxi.3
Bolt shows an estimate after the destination is entered and says price depends on distance and ride type. Its Croatian terms say fares can include base, distance and duration components. An upfront amount may change if the destination changes, the trip becomes materially longer or tolls apply. Uber similarly warns that tolls, surcharges and route changes can alter an upfront fare in Zagreb.9105
Card payment is available in both major apps. Bolt says cash and mobile methods depend on location, so treat the payment choices actually shown for that request as authoritative. At Zagreb Airport's contracted taxi rank, many cards and digital wallets are accepted, but the airport advises confirming the exact card before taking the ride.951
At Zagreb Airport, the contracted taxi pickup is beside the arrivals Meet and Greet area on the terminal ground floor. Uber currently offers ride products such as UberX rather than its Taxi category for airport trips. Request only after checking the app's current instructions, walk to the assigned pin and match the driver and plate before entering.16
If the app places the pickup pin outside a historic centre, use the accessible road entrance it shows. Send the accommodation name in chat, then compare the plate, car and driver before entering. Never cancel a recorded trip because someone at the curb offers a different car or direct price.102
For an early flight, ferry or bus, treat advance scheduling as one part of the plan rather than the only way to reach the departure. Bolt's Croatia support page says a reserved order is cancelled if the driver cannot complete it. Keep enough time to call a licensed local operator. On Krk, Wizi accepts app requests and publishes a local phone booking option.1113
If the live quote is high, compare the other app before cancelling. If neither app shows a real car, use the official rank or a licensed operator rather than waiting beside a road with luggage. Croatia's market is broad, but supply changes sharply by season, time and exact pickup.482
If both major apps fail, ask your hotel or host to call a licensed local taxi or use the signed airport or station rank. Call Wizi where its current local page confirms service. For a timed trip, switch early enough that the backup can actually reach you.1212
