What to know about Transit in Fiji

Fiji has useful and inexpensive buses on Viti Levu, but there is no comprehensive journey-planning app comparable with those in large metropolitan systems. The important digital rule is payment: public buses use eTransport, and the Land Transport Authority reinforced the cashless no-card, no-ride policy in December 2025. Tourism Fiji says visitors can buy disposable cards in preset values from bus checkers; they remain valid for 30 days and can be refunded during that period at a Vodafone retail outlet. At Nadi Airport, the Vodafone outlet in arrivals is a practical place to ask for the correct visitor card before relying on a bus. The eTransport Fiji Android app can manage a new card, check balances and support top-up or redemption, but it requires one-time signup and suitable NFC hardware. Vodafone says an iOS version is still pending, so iPhone users must manage balances through Vodafone stores, agents or supported bus-terminal facilities. The physical card matters more than the app. Do not assume that a driver will accept cash because some travelers were informally helped in the past. Google Maps does not reliably show local routes. Ask at the bus stand, confirm the destination with the driver and allow extra time. For intercity coaches, consult the operator's current timetable directly because stops and services can change.

Pro tip: The bus card is mandatory, but the app is not. It needs Android, NFC and signup; iPhone users should use Vodafone outlets or agents to manage the card.
