It plans journeys, shows buses in real time and sells single or period tickets for capital routes 1 to 36. For one adult taking occasional Reykjavík buses, installing it is usually unnecessary: tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay credential when boarding. Use the same physical card or same wallet device every time to preserve the 75-minute transfer and daily or weekly fare cap. A phone wallet and its underlying physical card count as different payment media.
One credential buys one adult contactless fare, so each adult needs a separate card or device. Klappið can be useful for group tickets, passes and live bus positions, and it allows anonymous use, but needs internet for purchase and scanning. Its current Android rating is poor, with repeated reports of login, foreign-number, payment and ticket-loading failures. Strætó also warns that some Android wallets can override an open Klappið QR code and charge an extra contactless fare.
Country buses use a different system and accept ordinary debit or credit cards, bus tickets or cash. Klappið products are not valid there. For Keflavík Airport, public bus 55 is the budget option; Flybus runs flight-coordinated service to BSÍ and can be booked without installing an app. Confirm schedules before travel because service frequency and the last connection matter.
Reykjavík has no rail or metro. Walking is often fastest in the center, but wind, ice and distance can change that calculation.
