What to know about Transit in Laos

Vientiane is the only Lao city where a dedicated local transit app is worth listing. LaoBus shows urban, intercity and international bus information with routes, stops and live vehicle positions where data is available. It can help a visitor understand the network, but it is not an official promise that a bus will arrive at the displayed minute. Verify the route number, direction, service hours and fare at the stop or with staff, and keep small Lao kip ready unless the operator clearly offers another payment method. Vientiane's Bus Rapid Transit system began passenger service on 10 March 2026 between Dongdok and the Morning Market area. Its introductory arrangements and fares have changed during rollout, so do not rely on an old launch article or a travel blog for the current charge. Follow station notices and current app data. The Morning Market and central bus station area can refer to different stops and services, while long distance buses may leave from northern or southern terminals outside the center. Check the exact terminal and map pin before departure. For an airport or time critical connection, allow for waiting, traffic and limited evening frequency, and retain LOCA or a prearranged transfer as a fallback. Save the destination in Lao script and a screenshot of the return stop. LaoBus is optional for a short stay centered on walking and ride hailing, but it can materially reduce confusion for a budget traveler using the new BRT or city buses.

Pro tip: Use it to plan, then verify the route, direction, current fare and last service at the stop. Keep a ride backup for critical departures.
