Google Maps is reliable for intercity orientation, modern neighborhoods, major roads, and saving places, but it is not a trustworthy turn-by-turn guide through every medina. Narrow passages can be misclassified, GPS position drifts between thick walls, and a route may end at a locked gate or a lane a car cannot enter. Download an offline map for every city before travel, save the accommodation, station, parking area, and nearest accessible medina gate, and screenshot the final walking instructions. Ask the property to send a live pin and recognizable entrance photo through WhatsApp. Use landmarks and street signs to check the route instead of blindly following the blue dot. Unsolicited helpers sometimes claim a road is closed and then demand money after leading visitors elsewhere; current British travel advice specifically warns about bogus guides.
