Mobile payments and digital wallets, curated for travelers visiting Morocco.
A Moroccan wallet is not an arrival requirement. Visa and Mastercard are accepted by many hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets, petrol stations, and modern retailers, while souks, small cafés, taxis, local guides, and rural stops still commonly require Moroccan dirhams. Bring a travel-enabled physical card, a second card stored separately, and some cash. Mobile wallets marketed to residents create more friction than value for a short visit. Orange Money can technically be opened by a foreign visitor using a passport and a Morocco-issued mobile number, but its own support pages say bank-card funding requires a card issued by a Moroccan bank. Otherwise the wallet must be loaded at an Orange Money agent. That defeats the main reason a traveler would install it. Apple Pay or Google Pay acceptance depends on the merchant's contactless terminal and your home bank, so do not make the phone your only payment method. Let your bank perform card conversion in Moroccan dirhams instead of accepting an unfamiliar merchant conversion. Inspect every total before entering a PIN, keep the card in sight, and use cash when a small business adds confusion or cannot provide a proper terminal. Official tourism guidance confirms that cash remains important even though cards are increasingly available. There is therefore no local payment app that earns a recommendation for an ordinary tourist.
