What to know about Language in Philippines

English is an official language and is widely used in hotels, airports, tourism, business and government services, so most visitors do not need a dedicated language app for routine travel. Filipino, largely based on Tagalog, is the other official language, while Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Waray and many other regional languages are used across the archipelago. Download Filipino in Google Translate if you want an offline fallback, but do not assume Tagalog is every person's first or preferred language. Short polite English, a written place name and an exact map pin usually solve more transport problems than a long machine-translated sentence. Camera translation can help with signs or menus, although English text is common and handwritten material may be unreliable. Save the local-language spelling of a hotel, port, medical condition or dietary restriction before leaving coverage. Translation quality drops with regional languages, mixed Filipino and English, slang and voice input in noisy terminals. Show the original English alongside any translated text so a bilingual person can correct it. Do not use machine translation as the sole basis for medical consent, police statements, legal documents, allergy safety or a financial agreement. Ask the hospital, embassy, insurer, tour operator or accommodation for a human interpreter in those situations. Avoid trying to imitate an unfamiliar accent or using overly casual slang. A greeting such as salamat for thank you is appreciated, but clear respectful English is entirely normal. Keep emergency details and medicine names written plainly rather than relying on a live data connection.

Google Translate

An optional offline Filipino and camera-translation backup; routine tourism usually works in English without it.

Pro tip: Download Filipino before travel and show the English original too. Regional languages and mixed local speech can defeat machine translation.
