English is common in many tourist-facing settings and among younger urban residents, but it should not be assumed in rural transport, small businesses, medical situations or conversations with older people. Google Translate is a practical backup for typed text, speech and camera translation. Download Romanian before arrival and test offline mode, because downloadable language support does not make every feature or language pair available offline. Camera translation is useful for signs and menus, but stylized fonts, handwriting, diacritics and poor lighting can change the meaning.
For allergies, medical needs, police reports, contracts, fines or safety instructions, do not act on an unverified machine translation. Prepare a short Romanian allergy or medical note in advance and ask a bilingual person or professional interpreter to check critical wording. Keep the original text visible beside the translation and ask the other person to confirm names, numbers, dates and destinations. Place names may appear with or without Romanian diacritics, so save both the venue name and full address rather than relying on pronunciation.
In a taxi, train station or bus exchange, showing the written destination and departure time is more reliable than repeating a translated phrase. Offline translation still depends on a charged, accessible phone; keep your accommodation address, emergency contact and essential medical information available separately.
