Payments Apps in Rwanda

Mobile Money Rwanda, usually called MTN MoMo, is deeply embedded in daily payments, but the service and its app are not the same thing. A short visitor can buy a Rwandan-numbered MTN SIM from an official outlet and register it with a valid passport. MTN's current Mobile Money terms allow a wallet to be opened with accepted identity documentation including a passport. Complete both SIM and wallet registration with official staff, set a private PIN, and fund only through an authorized agent. The USSD menu at *182# can make payments without the smartphone app or mobile data, and local users often prefer it because the consumer app has drawn complaints about repeated PIN and OTP steps. The app is therefore optional convenience, not an essential pre-arrival download. A travel data eSIM that supplies no Rwandan number cannot open this local wallet. If the visit is very short, physical Visa or Mastercard, Rwandan francs, and a backup card are usually simpler. Cards work at many hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets, tourist centers, and ATMs, while small merchants may accept only cash or mobile money. Do not describe Rwanda as cashless or promise universal acceptance. Withdraw at an ATM attached to an open bank, reject unwanted dynamic currency conversion, and keep enough small local notes for rides and small purchases. Never hand a wallet PIN or one-time code to an agent or merchant. If MoMo setup fails, do not use a stranger's account as an improvised wallet; use cash, a card, or a verified merchant payment route instead.
