Physical Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express and UnionPay are accepted at most staffed stores, hotels and restaurants, according to current Korea Tourism Organization guidance. Carry at least two cards on different networks and keep one separate. A phone wallet only presents its underlying card, so it does not solve every local-terminal or issuer decline. Keep some won for markets, small businesses, transit-card top-ups and recovery when a kiosk or online checkout rejects foreign credentials.

Korean wallets such as Kakao Pay and Naver Pay are resident products that usually require Korean identity, a Korean phone contract or a local bank relationship. They should not be recommended to ordinary visitors. WOWPASS is an optional workaround, not an automatic essential. Its physical prepaid card can help at domestic card terminals that reject a foreign card, and the app shows the spending balance, exchange options and kiosk locations.

A traveler with two reliable no-foreign-transaction-fee cards and cash may not need it. The WOWPASS spending balance and the Tmoney transit balance on the same physical card are separate. Loading one does not load the other. Check the live exchange rate, top-up method, withdrawal rule and fee before committing a large amount.

Never assume a foreign card will work in a Korean website merely because the same card worked in a shop. Use the operator's international checkout, the official foreign-language site or pay in person. Decline home-currency conversion at an ATM or terminal when the won amount and issuer conversion are preferable. Keep receipts for tax refund claims and show the physical passport where the merchant requires it.
