Spain

City-specific transit, optional licensed rides, direct rail booking and practical safety tools

15 apps2 essentialEuropeLast updated: August 2026

Spain is easy to navigate with cards and public transport, but there is no nationwide urban fare app and no taxi app that every traveler needs. Freenow books licensed taxis in supported cities, while Cabify and Uber provide useful local alternatives where the app confirms service. Urban tickets, airport supplements, contactless rules and mobile fare cards remain city-specific. Renfe is the main official app for Renfe trains, not a complete search of every Spanish rail operator; compare iryo and OUIGO directly on competitive high-speed corridors. Alsa is the most broadly useful national coach app. Bizum is not a tourist wallet: it works through participating bank accounts and currently requires a Spanish or Andorran IBAN. Cards are widely accepted, but carry a physical backup card and some euros for small businesses, machines and acceptance failures. The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at applicable European external borders since 10 April 2026. ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026 but is not yet required as of 4 August 2026, so do not pay a site claiming to issue it early. Pickpocketing is a practical risk in crowded transport and attractions. AlertCops can provide multilingual police chat, location sharing and incident reporting in Spain, but foreign-number verification and app reliability can fail. Call 112 for an emergency and never delay a call while trying to make an app work.
