There's no national urban transit ticket in Spain. Madrid added direct bank-card entry to its Metro in June 2026, while Barcelona still centres most useful short-stay fares on T-mobilitat. Each city keeps its own fare system.
Choose and pay through the local transport authority in each city, then buy intercity rail separately from Renfe. In Madrid, a contactless bank card now buys a Metro single at the gate, but it won't calculate a daily best fare yet. In Barcelona, a bank card buys only a non-integrated single on TMB buses or at selected Metro entrances. For repeat journeys, choose the city's actual multi-journey or visitor product instead of tapping by habit.

Urban tickets are local. Madrid's Multi and visitor pass belong to the Madrid region, while Barcelona uses its own integrated products and T-mobilitat support. Neither works as a fare card in another Spanish city. Check the operator and fare zone shown on every new itinerary.43913
Renfe also separates long-distance, medium-distance and Cercanías commuter products. The same station may serve a city Metro and a Renfe train behind different gates. A route planner can join the legs, but only the fare terms show whether a transfer is included.1516
For step-free travel, check the exact station and elevator status, not only the line. Madrid's transport authority publishes accessibility by mode. In Barcelona, nine Metro stations still lack full access, and TMB publishes elevator status on each station page.618
Since 1 June 2026, Madrid Metro has accepted contactless credit or debit cards, phones and watches at designated gates. The first phase sells a single Metro ticket directly at entry. It does not load a reusable transport card or replace the wider range of CRTM products.1
Madrid has announced a later account-based system that will calculate the most advantageous fare across a broader network, but its planned rollout begins in the final quarter of 2027. Until that rollout is live, repeated 2026 bank-card entries remain singles rather than an automatic capped day of travel.2
Multi is a non-personal reusable card that can hold up to three compatible fare products. It can be shared for companions making the same journey by validating once for each person. Load the correct single or multi-journey product for the modes and zones you need; the plastic card only carries what you load onto it.4
The Tourist Travel Pass is personal and provides unlimited covered travel for one, two, three, four, five or seven consecutive calendar days. These are calendar days, not rolling 24-hour periods, and validity begins at first use. Choose Zone A for the core city or Zone T for the broader region. It includes the Metro airport supplement and excludes EMT's Airport Express bus.35
At Madrid Airport, a Metro single or ten-journey ticket needs the published airport supplement, while the valid visitor pass includes it. EMT Airport Express uses a separate 5-euro bus fare and sits outside that pass. Contactless single-fare payment works on every EMT line, including Airport Express, but the bank-card tap does not make that bus part of the visitor pass.57
Barcelona Metro line L9 Sud serves both airport terminals, but T-casual doesn't cover the Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 Metro stations. Use the airport Metro ticket or another product that explicitly includes those stations. Rodalies R2 Nord serves Terminal 2 and participates in the ATM integrated fare system, so a T-casual loaded for the required zones can be valid there. Validate before boarding and compare the destination and transfer.111017
T-casual gives one person ten integrated journeys for the zones loaded and allows covered transfers within the product's time rule. It cannot be validated repeatedly to carry a companion on the same journey. T-familiar and T-grup are among the products designed for multi-person use, so choose the ticket for the traveling party rather than trying to share T-casual.1014
On a TMB bus, a contactless bank-card tap buys and validates one non-integrated single for that bus. Selected Metro entrances also have a bank-card single-ticket reader. This is convenient for one isolated ride, but it does not create a T-mobilitat balance, an integrated transfer or a daily cap. Keep the card available because its last four digits provide proof during inspection.12
T-mobilitat can use a physical support or a compatible NFC phone. The mobile route requires registration and its own electronic support, so setup may take longer than a short visit justifies. A physical anonymous support loaded from a machine is the safer fallback when the phone, account or NFC setup becomes the trip's bottleneck.13
Buy AVE and other long-distance trains for the specific date and departure through Renfe or an authorised channel. These tickets are named, and Renfe can request valid photo identification at access control or onboard. Read the fare option before paying because change and cancellation rights depend on the selected conditions.1516
Cercanías tickets are local to their commuter network and normally need the required validation before travel. Madrid Cercanías also has its own Cronos bank-card option, which requires the same card at entry and exit. That journey record is separate from Madrid Metro's 2026 bank-card single-ticket system.8161
Many AVE, Alvia, Euromed and Intercity tickets include Combinado Cercanías at the origin and destination. Check the long-distance ticket for the barcode or five-digit code, then use it at an eligible machine or ticket office to obtain the associated commuter ticket. Confirm this benefit before paying twice for the local rail leg.16
If a bank-card gate, mobile support or ticket machine fails, use a staffed office or another official sales point before entering the paid area. Keep one physical payment card separate from the phone wallet. Retain every paper or digital ticket until the journey ends, and never cross from Metro to Cercanías assuming the first tap covers both systems.1121516
Yes. Repeat the tap for every rider who needs a single. The reader should confirm each transaction separately; TMB records the total against that payment credential.
Yes. Children younger than 11 receive a 50% discount on the Tourist Travel Pass. Each pass remains personal, so every child needs the discounted product issued for them.
Renfe says purchases through its own website and app carry no administration fee. The fare's change and refund conditions still depend on the ticket option selected.
