What to know about Transit in Spain

There is no single urban-transit app or fare system for Spain. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, island networks and smaller cities use different operators, cards, ticket apps and contactless rules. Install an official local app only when it solves a real itinerary need. As of August 2026, a contactless bank card or wallet can buy a single Metro de Madrid journey at enabled gates, but this first phase is not a daily fare cap and does not turn the same tap into a universal Madrid bus, Cercanías or regional ticket. Madrid's current Mi Tarjeta Transporte app can hold and validate supported fares on Android, while the current CRTM app page still directs iPhone users to physical-card functions. Barcelona's TMB App can plan routes and manage T-mobilitat products, but account, media and validation rules still apply. A bank-card tap accepted on one network does not prove it works nationwide or on every bus and tram. Check the official operator for the current fare, zones, airport supplement, transfer rules, validation method, disruption and last departure. Keep a physical card and some euros because a phone battery, foreign-card token or machine can fail. For a short city stay, a simple ticket or official visitor product may be easier than registration in a local app. Renfe does not belong here as Spain's universal urban-transit solution. Leave extra time for large interchanges and confirm step-free routes where accessibility matters.
