Transit Apps in Tanzania

There is no nationwide urban-transit app. In Dar es Salaam, DART's official Mwendokasi app is the only local transit install with a clear visitor use: it shows BRT routes, trip planning, service notices, and QR-ticket purchase. The current Android listing is active and was updated in June 2026. The former iPhone listing is no longer reachable, so Bento should not show an App Store button. Ticket purchase uses the app's wallet workflow and may be less convenient than buying at a station if a foreign visitor cannot fund it easily. A QR ticket expires after three hours and is tied to the chosen boarding station. Use the app for information first, then ask station staff how to pay. DART covers only part of Dar, with other phases still under construction, and it does not map every dala dala. Crowded buses and stations are pickpocketing environments. Keep the phone and wallet secured and avoid displaying valuables. Official travel advice says dala dalas, boda bodas, and bajajis can be poorly maintained, badly driven, and inadequately insured. A BRT journey may be practical in daylight on a clear corridor, but it is not automatically the best airport, luggage, late-night, or unfamiliar-area option. Elsewhere, ask the accommodation for current routes and fares, and use a verified ride or transfer when the local system is unclear.
