What to know about Transit in Turkey

There is no single public-transport app or card for every Turkish city. Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Bursa, and other cities have their own networks, fares, cards, and official notices. In Istanbul, the visitor solution is normally a physical anonymous Istanbulkart bought and reloaded at an official BELBIM vending machine or sales point. The official visitor site also says contactless credit and debit cards can pay directly across public transport, but they can cost more per ride and do not reproduce every transfer or refund benefit. Compare the current fare before choosing a tourist pass. Do not buy a card from an unsolicited helper, and check the machine screen and receipt yourself. Istanbulkart Mobile supports QR travel and wallet functions, but current registration guidance and traveler reports show that it is designed around a Turkish phone number and Turkish or foreign-resident identity data. Remove it from the tourist app list. A physical anonymous card does not require the app and can be topped up at official machines. Other cities use different products, such as Ankarakart or Izmirim Kart, so buy the local card only after confirming the itinerary. Türkiye Kart is still being rolled out and should not be described as a universal replacement that works on every relevant line. Use Google Maps for an initial route, then confirm line direction, operating hours, last service, fare, and accessibility with the local operator or station staff. Keep the phone and wallet controlled in crowded vehicles and allow extra time during demonstrations, matches, holidays, weather, or maintenance.
