How to Use Public Transport in Turkey

PTT's national card is a rollout, not a universal promise

PTT describes its national card as a countrywide platform, but its own wording limits public-transport use to municipalities, institutions and operators that have an agreement and completed the needed integration. Its corporate page still says work is under way to create one payment system for all cities.67

Foreign citizens can obtain the anonymous prepaid version from PTT offices or PTT kiosks. That answers who can buy it, not where it works. Ask whether the local network takes the PTT card before loading it, or use the city's own card, ticket machine or supported bank-card validator.6

Integration can be line-specific inside one city. In March 2026, the ministry confirmed Türkiye Kart on the M11 section between Gayrettepe and Istanbul Airport while saying work on Marmaray was still under way. That does not establish acceptance on every Istanbul service or on the newer M11 stations toward Halkalı. Check the exact operator and line before loading the card.68

In Istanbul, the lower tap fare comes with a card cost

On 25 August 2026, Metro Istanbul listed a full anonymous Istanbulkart fare of 46.20 TL and a one-pass electronic ticket at 65 TL. The lower ride fare favors Istanbulkart on repeated trips, but its purchase fee and any line-specific fare still belong in the comparison.91

The city's official visitor page says contactless credit and debit cards work across buses, metro, tram, cable car, Metrobus and ferries. It also lists unlimited City Cards for 1, 3, 5, 7 or 15 days. Neither is automatically the best value. Compare the current product price with the routes and transfers you will actually use.1

The 46.20 TL figure covers a standard full boarding. Istanbul publishes separate tables for Metrobus, Marmaray, ferries and airport services, including route or distance-based multiples. Read the machine and official tariff for an unusual line rather than multiplying the base fare yourself.2

Anonymous Istanbulkart is sold at BELBİM machines and authorized representatives and must be loaded with Turkish lira. The official guidance says remaining balance stays on the card after the trip. Add enough for the next day rather than the whole holiday.1

Both Istanbul airports now have a rail answer

The final 22-kilometre Halkalı to Arnavutköy section opened on 19 June 2026 and began carrying passengers the next day, completing the line between Gayrettepe, Istanbul Airport and Halkalı. The full route has 16 stations across 69 kilometres. Published timings are 30 minutes from Halkalı to the airport and 57 minutes from Halkalı to Gayrettepe.34

This changes the airport decision: Halkalı is now an operating western connection with Marmaray and other rail services, while Gayrettepe connects toward the central M2 corridor and Metrobus. Choose the end from the hotel address and onward interchange, not from whichever station name looks more central on a map.4

Sabiha Gökçen Airport is the final station of M4 from Kadıköy. Metro Istanbul lists 23 stations, a 52-minute end-to-end ride and ordinary operating hours of 06:00 to 00:00. Ayrılık Çeşmesi connects with Marmaray, while Ünalan connects with Metrobus.10

Ankara prices transfers and the airport separately

Ankara's tariff changed on 23 August 2026. A full Başkent Kart ride is 40 TL and a standard full transfer is 20 TL. The card permits up to two transfers within 75 minutes on most city services, with stated exceptions.11

A contactless bank-card ride is 46 TL and an NFC payment by phone is 45 TL; neither receives a transfer fare. For a bus-to-metro journey, that makes the local card materially cheaper than tapping a bank card twice. On some routes within the wider metropolitan boundary, the operator adds another 6 TL to payments by bank card or mobile NFC.11

Choose before the first validation. Starting with a bank card and switching to Başkent Kart for the second boarding does not turn that boarding into a transfer because the credentials differ. If you only need one ride, the direct tap buys convenience; if you need a connection, buy or load the local card first.11

EGO route 442 links Esenboğa Airport with Ulus, Ankara station, Kızılay and AŞTİ. EGO's tariff effective 23 August 2026 lists the route at 150 TL. The airport says cash and credit-card payment are available and buses leave from domestic and international arrivals. Check the live 442 timetable rather than assuming a flight-timed departure.11125

Outside Istanbul and Ankara, verify three things

Check the municipal operator for three separate facts: where to buy the fare product, whether a foreign contactless card works at the validator, and whether transfers require the same local card. A map result can name the bus without answering any of those payment questions.7

If the operator explicitly lists PTT's national card, it can reduce the number of local cards on a multi-city trip. Without that listing, preloading the national product is a gamble. The official program itself ties acceptance to local electronic fare infrastructure and agreements.67
