Telegram is the more useful optional install because many city administrations, transport operators and local institutions publish operational updates there. Viber remains common for personal and group communication, so keep it only if accommodation, a guide, family or another real contact uses it. WhatsApp also works, but it is not the single national default and does not merit a country-specific recommendation by itself. A 2025 media-use study found Telegram and Viber among the most frequently used messengers, while current traveler discussions consistently identify Telegram channels as a practical supplement.
Treat any channel with caution. Follow accounts linked from an official government, city or operator website, check the account name and history, and do not let an anonymous attack-monitoring channel override Повітряна тривога, a siren or instructions from authorities. Telegram channels can provide context but cannot know that a route or building is safe. Hide your phone number from strangers, enable two-step verification and reject unexpected requests for money, documents, locations or account codes.
Do not post photographs or details of military movements, air defence, checkpoints, damage or strike locations. Save essential host and transport contacts offline because cyberattacks, power cuts and network disruption can disable every messenger. For an emergency, call 112, 101, 102 or 103 rather than sending a message and waiting for it to be read.
