What to know about Restaurants in China

Dianping is mainland China's specialist restaurant and local-business discovery tool, comparable in purpose to Yelp rather than a delivery app. It has dense local listings, photos, menus, price indications, opening hours, reviews and ranking lists. AMap Global is the easier alternative when you only need nearby restaurants and directions because its international interface is stronger. Dianping is useful for food-focused travelers, but it is not essential: the app remains largely Chinese, translation coverage is incomplete, and account or coupon features may request a mainland number. Its WeChat mini program can be easier to translate for some users. Use customer-uploaded dish photos and the Chinese restaurant name to understand what a venue serves, then copy that name into AMap for navigation. Treat scores cautiously because current local and traveler reports describe incentives for positive reviews. Opening hours and temporary closures can also be wrong, so confirm with the venue for a special trip. Google Maps and Tripadvisor have much thinner or older local coverage. Dianping and Meituan share a corporate owner and overlapping data, but Dianping belongs here as discovery, not under food delivery. Simply walking through a busy mall food floor or a neighborhood away from the main sight remains a low-friction option when the app setup is not worth it.

Pro tip: Use photos and Chinese venue names, then navigate in AMap. Translation is incomplete, a mainland number may be requested, and incentivized reviews make ratings worth treating cautiously.
