A foreign phone number can be used to register, and the current official visitor guidance allows international cards to be linked after identity verification. This does not make every feature available: foreign cards generally fund merchant purchases, not balance top-ups, person-to-person transfers or personal QR payments. Keep Alipay and cash as backups. Registration is the main visitor risk.
Current traveler reports through August 2026 show that some new accounts activate immediately while others require an established WeChat user to scan a verification QR code, sometimes after initial signup. Create the account well before departure, complete passport and card verification, and test messaging and payment while you can still receive SMS on the registered number. Do not pay strangers to verify an account. Mini programs can reduce the number of separate Chinese apps you need, but their interfaces and identity requirements vary.
WeChat is close to universal for local communication, yet an independent traveler can still manage core payments and rides with Alipay and DiDi if WeChat registration fails.
