What to know about Language in Colombia

Spanish is the official and overwhelmingly useful travel language, although Colombia also has extensive Indigenous linguistic diversity and strong regional differences in accent and vocabulary. English is available at some international hotels, tour businesses and private clinics, but it is not a dependable default for taxi dispatch, bus terminals, small restaurants or rural travel. Download Spanish in Google Translate before arrival and save the accommodation address, terminal name and a short explanation of any medical condition or serious allergy. Offline translation is useful for typed text and downloaded languages, but some live, camera and conversation features still need connectivity. Keep important names and addresses in their original Spanish spelling, including accents, so a driver or station employee can recognize them. Useful words include efectivo for cash, tarjeta for card, datáfono for card terminal, sencillo for small change, taquilla for ticket counter, equipaje for luggage and salida for exit or departure. Colombians may say bus, buseta, colectivo or flota for different road services, and a terminal can mean a long-distance bus station rather than an airport terminal. Ask a follow-up question when a translation changes the time, price, pickup point or safety instruction. Machine translation should not make a medical, police, immigration or legal decision for you. In an emergency, call 123 and state the city, address and type of help needed. Show a written phrase to a responsible person if pronunciation or background noise makes the call unclear.
