Payments Apps in France

France uses the euro. Contactless Visa and Mastercard work at most hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, attractions and larger shops, so an ordinary traveler does not need a France-specific payment app.

Bring a physical card with its PIN because terminals can request insertion, a phone wallet can fail and some automated machines do not accept every foreign card. Keep a second card from another issuer separate and carry modest euro cash for markets, small rural businesses, tips, outages and merchants that impose a clearly displayed card minimum. American Express and Discover are less dependable than Visa or Mastercard. The 50 euro domestic contactless limit applies to an ordinary physical-card tap, while authenticated mobile-wallet transactions can exceed it within bank and merchant limits.

Wero is not a traveler wallet: it requires an eligible account at a participating bank and does not create a bank account. Revolut and Wise may be useful if the traveler already has an eligible account with favorable terms, but neither is required to function in France. At an ATM, use a recognizable bank machine, read both operator and issuer fees and decline conversion into the home currency so the card issuer handles the exchange. Do not assume that ordinary contactless retail acceptance means a bank card works as a Paris transit ticket.
