Messaging Apps in Ghana

WhatsApp is the only messaging app most visitors need specifically for Ghana. Hotels, guides, drivers, tour operators, restaurants and smaller businesses commonly use it for directions, confirmations and customer service. Ghana Statistical Service research also identifies WhatsApp as the dominant internet-calling platform among surveyed users. Install and verify it before departure while the normal phone number can receive an SMS or call. A Ghanaian SIM does not require changing the WhatsApp account number, so keeping the original identity is usually simpler for existing contacts. Ask for the official business number through the property's website, booking platform or verified profile rather than trusting an unsolicited message. Ghana's Cyber Security Authority regularly warns about account takeover, impersonation and payment scams on WhatsApp. Enable two-step verification, never share the six-digit registration code or PIN, and independently call a known number if a contact suddenly changes payment instructions. A logo, profile photo or familiar writing style is not proof of identity. Share live location or a map pin with a known driver or guide, but avoid posting passport images, card details or travel plans in public groups. Save hotel, airline and emergency contacts outside the app so that a lost phone, weak data connection or compromised account does not remove the only copy.
