What to know about Transit in Ghana

Ghana does not have one dependable journey planner for the complete public-transport network. Accra and other cities rely heavily on informal trotros whose routes, boarding points and fares are not comprehensively mapped in a current official app. Google Maps and Moovit can show some formal or contributed transit information, but neither should be treated as an authoritative planner for the whole network. Tap n' Go is the only dedicated transit app worth listing. It is a government-backed platform for participating buses and transport services, with features that include ticket or fare functions, bus booking and card management. Acceptance is not universal, so seeing the app does not mean every trotro, bus or route can use it. Check the exact participating operator and vehicle before loading value or relying on a digital fare. Carry small cedi notes, ask the driver's mate, station staff or accommodation which vehicle and boarding point to use, and confirm the destination and fare before boarding. Keep the phone and wallet secured in crowded stations and vehicles. Emerging community tools such as Troski may become useful but do not yet have enough adoption or authoritative coverage to recommend to every visitor. For a first journey, airport transfer, luggage, late arrival or fixed appointment, a verified ride-hailing trip is generally easier than learning an informal route under time pressure.

Pro tip: Coverage is not universal. Confirm that the exact operator and vehicle accept it before adding funds, and carry small cedi notes as a fallback.
