What to know about Language in Hong Kong

Chinese and English are Hong Kong's official languages. Cantonese is the usual spoken language for most residents, and Traditional Chinese is the local written form. Mandarin is not a substitute for identifying written Hong Kong Chinese, although many people can speak it. English is widely used in government, business, transport and tourist areas, but it is not guaranteed in every taxi, market, older restaurant or village. Google Translate is a practical optional fallback for signs, menus and short written exchanges. Set the written language to Chinese Traditional, download available Chinese data and test camera translation before leaving Wi-Fi. Automatic speech translation may label or handle Cantonese separately from Mandarin, and spoken colloquial Cantonese can differ from standard written Chinese. For a destination, show the Traditional Chinese name and address instead of relying on a phonetic attempt. Keep names, MTR exits and medical terms visible in the original script. For allergies, prepare a precise Traditional Chinese card naming the ingredient and cross-contact risk, then confirm it with staff. Never rely on machine translation alone for medical consent, police statements, legal documents, immigration questions or a consequential payment. Use a qualified interpreter or trusted human for those decisions.
