Utilities Apps in Hong Kong

MyObservatory is the most broadly useful official safety app in Hong Kong. It provides local observations, nine-day forecasts, radar, tropical-cyclone tracks, tides and official warnings for rainstorms, thunderstorms, extreme heat and other weather. Enable only the needed location and warning notifications, and check the latest bulletin before outdoor travel, ferries, exposed viewpoints or an airport transfer. The Observatory warns that push notifications can arrive late or fail, so never use the app as the sole warning channel. During a tropical cyclone or rainstorm, follow official instructions and transport-operator notices; a route or booking shown in another app is not proof that service is running. HKSOS is a specialist optional app for hiking and remote outdoor activities. It connects to the Hong Kong Police 999 centre and can help rescuers locate a distressed user, including through its special signal technology in difficult conditions. Set it up and test it before a hike, but still carry power, download the route, tell someone the plan and return time, and avoid hiking alone. Mobile coverage in country parks can be patchy. In any immediate emergency call 999 for police, fire or ambulance. An app, chat or location share does not replace that call.
