What to know about Language in Ireland

English is the main practical language for visitors throughout the Republic of Ireland. Irish, or Gaeilge, is also an official language and remains a daily community language in Gaeltacht areas, especially along parts of the west coast. Public signs and place names can be bilingual, and a destination may appear in Irish and English. Keep the exact spelling and Eircode rather than assuming two names indicate different places. An English-speaking traveler does not need a translation app. Google Translate is an optional aid for visitors who do not speak English, and its downloadable language packs and camera mode can help with simple signs, menus and short written exchanges. Download English and the traveler's language before departure, test the offline mode and save the accommodation address, allergy statement and essential itinerary as text and screenshots. Offline language support does not preserve every online feature. Automated translation can misunderstand Irish place names, Hiberno-English expressions and technical or legal wording. Do not use it as the only interpreter for medical consent, police statements, official interviews or a serious allergy discussion. Ask the responsible service for a qualified interpreter. In an emergency, call 112 or 999 and state the required language as clearly as possible. Learning `go raibh maith agat` for thank you is appreciated, but nobody should assume Irish is required to manage an ordinary trip.
