Download each destination area before travel, save the exact accommodation entrance and review the full route rather than following the next turn blindly. Offline maps do not include live traffic, current closures or dependable public-transport updates. The most important driving limitation is the zona a traffico limitato, or ZTL. Historic centers use camera-controlled restricted zones whose hours, eligible vehicles and access rules vary by municipality.

A rental car is not exempt. Navigation apps can warn about some zones but do not reliably know every current restriction or temporary change, and recent travelers still report being routed toward controlled entrances. The roadside sign and the municipality's current rules are authoritative. Do not cross a ZTL entrance unless the vehicle is definitely authorized, even when the hotel is inside; ask the property in advance how license-plate registration works and retain its confirmation.

Driving is usually a burden in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and other dense centers. Trains and local transport are generally better between and within major cities, while a car is most useful for rural areas. Park outside historic centers and continue on foot or transit. Google Maps data for local buses varies by operator and city, so verify critical departures in an official operator channel.

For hiking or isolated roads, use a suitable specialist map and local safety information rather than a general city map alone.
