Ride Hailing Apps in Italy

Italy has no national private-driver ride-hailing market. Freenow and itTaxi dispatch licensed taxis, while Uber mainly offers more expensive licensed NCC chauffeur vehicles under Uber Black and integrates taxis in selected cities. Freenow is the most practical visitor app in Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Catania, Palermo and other listed markets. itTaxi is a useful local backup where Freenow has no cars. Both taxi apps can show estimates while the legal meter determines the final fare unless a fixed product is explicitly offered. English is available, foreign phone numbers work, and a local ID or bank account is not required. Freenow accepts international cards and common mobile wallets. itTaxi can take cards in the app or mark payment to the driver, but terminal acceptance should be confirmed. Uber accepts the traveler's existing foreign card, but its Black product is not the cheap UberX visitors expect. Lyft and Bolt Rides do not provide a comparable national service. Taxi supply can be scarce during strikes, rain and major events, so a taxi rank or hotel call remains necessary in smaller towns. Uber remains active in the listed Italian cities as of July 2026, usually through licensed taxis or premium NCC hire cars rather than a uniform nationwide UberX product.
